I am not an expert but if it happened to me i would clean out the boost solenoid, check all its pipework and check the coil packs for a start.

Ok, was just wondering incase you were in limp home mode & the check engine lamp wasn't working.

How old is the car?

Does it only happen on boost/hard acceleration, or can you drive through the 4500 pm mark if you use a light throttle opening?

Hmmm, Thats both interesting & unusual.

So you can't get the car to drive through 4500 at all, but you CAN get it to rev cleanly through that point if you take it out of gear?

Have you carried out any work on the car prior to the fault?

Was it driving perfectly ok one day & faulty the next or has it slowly been getting worse?

Well there you go, that's your answer.

The engine ECU needs a speed signal from the Speedo. If that fails then it puts the car into limp home mode (restricted revs & boost).

When you get your speedo working again, the car will drive normally.
