Swap ECU from after my99 to my98 ??
Hi - have anyone knowledge about possibility to change ECU from after 1999 (ecutec) to 1998 ?? Ofcourse plug&play isn't possible but with big play with the connnections ??
For example - take pinout diagram from both ecus and change cables on the plugs ......... is any chance that it will work ??
Cheers

May I ask why would you want to retro fit an inferior, non-Ecutek (i.e. non-mappable) OEM v.4 ECU, in place of a v.5/6 one, in the first place?

To be honest I don't think it would be possible. If it was possible I am sure there would be loads of >99 owners queuing up to do it. It would be one of the recommended upgrades by all the mappers on here. Sorry

Technically, your title reads as if it's the ECU that's going from 99/00 to 98 LOL.
Well that makes more sense, at least

Go into Jolly Green Monster's 'Help Pages' on his website, where you'll see a sub-menu for all of the pin-out diagrams for the Classics. So you'll be able to carefully note how the pins differ between the two types of ECU.
Before you do though, I'd ask a specialist like JGM or Zen first, to see if it's possible/headaches invloved, etc...
Why not wait for a cheap Apexi PFC to turn up on here for the v.3/4 though? This will be a lot less hassle, surely? I am aware though that, should it be possible, the OEM v.5/6 option will be well cheap - that is, if it already has the 1st map and, therefore, the initial licence fee payed... Which, I guess, is why you're considering it, yes?

Yep. I'm certain that this would be the case. As Skooby53 says, if it were possible, then it would be a well documented mod on here...

- i'm polish that it's the reason
Generally i know how to do this (from the cable pin side) it's just big play with the wires but the question is that rest of components are suitable and new ECU setting will match old bits...
I know that simple way is the apexi powerfc or something like that but maybe is another way to tweak the car. I soupose that for "big" company like ZEN or JGM that cheap mod it's not very profitable.

the main issue is the idle motor.. the 98 uses a valve and the 99 a stepper motor.. so even if you swapped all the wires over for everything else you would have a headache with the idle valve.. swapping the stepper motor won't fit your inlet / throttle body.. you cannot swap the inlet manifold as the head to inlet manifold bolt pattern and width of the complete engines are different.. whether a 99 throttle body and stepper motor could be fitted to the 98 manifold. .. I don't see why not but may need fabrication work as not sure if the bolt holes line up.
Oh and the 99 uses a different coilpack which contains the ignitor.. the 98 has a separate ignitor so you would need to alter that too.. possibly..
In short.. go the Apexi PowerFC route

What about to go with ECU before 1997 -> What the difference are ??

I'm sure it'll involve similar headaches as per JGM's bullet points for the the 99/00 conversion.
You're really making life hard for yourself mate!... As I said, if you wait for a 2nd hand PFC then - and even if you can get the 92-96 ECU to fit - it'll still be cheaper than a new ESL live board anyway (there are not many ESL daughterboards sold 2nd hand, compared to the PFC...).

I think they've eluded to the fact that it'll be ready about Xmas/new year
...When it is available, make sure you keep an eye on its price, so you'll know what to do for the best

See here for FAQs (which will be relevent for the 97/98 ECU too)... Enduring Solutions Limited
NOTE: "What about model years other than 1992-6? We are working on Version 3 and 4 (1997/8)."

Basically it'll be this hardware... Enduring Solutions Limited... But re-engineered to suit the 97/98 ECU's loom/sensors, etc.!

that i know all about I had even ask question about but they didn't answer.....My question is HOW TO modify ...
Well if and when it is available, you'll need to get it mapped, so the mapper you choose e.g. JGM will be able to fit it into your existing OEM 98 ECU (soldering needed I think). I believe the mapper will be able to do this prior to the mapping session on the same day...

Ehhhhhh I would prefer DIY
it's my hobby
Well if you knew where to solder the board to etc., then, sure, you can do it yourself (I don't think it's hard TBH)
...
How good are you at mapping your car though whilst driving and using a laptop at the same time?!

at this - SAFR need the same
- and always You can use the logger
Ok - this thread leeding to nothing ......

A little ungrateful, I think
Ultimately your question has been answered by JGM and myself i.e. you need a PFC, ESL (when available), Simtek or other to make your 98 car mappable. There is no otherwise known/practiced cheap "hobbyist's" way to do it...

I can never remember the serial numbers.. and the couple of suppliers I use either use the Ej20g, k ,7 format or v1~2, v3~4 etc.. so I never need to know those numbers..
you need the EJ20K or version 3 to 4

And another question - what is the way to program it without the hand controller - what the way to connect laptop to this and any special software ?
And another one
what the possibility is that this : Subaru Impreza STI ecu v3/v4 upgrade for wrx /uk models on eBay, also, Subaru, Car Parts, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 23-Nov-08 19:45:00 GMT)ecu from STI will work as plug and play with my car ??

the ebay apexi link is the correct one yes.
the sti ecu will not work due to engine internals, heads, cams, injectors, turbo, maf are all different. It will run for a short time before you would probably get to see what the internals looked like
This is the reason they have altered the pinout for the jdm to uk ecus.. and it need to be altered when the Apexi is installed and mapped.

And what about connecting apexi to laptop ?? How easy it's to take proper cable ... ?? (without hand commander)

Datalogit is used to remap via laptop etc.. commander is only needed as a monitoring tool once mapped.. you can access some function on it and most of what you can do on the laptop you can do on the commander but no need to etc..
