What does use instead of the maf to read air flow?

It uses the map sensor to read air flow and air temp sensor at the TB to measure charge temps.

Righto, cheers for that. The car was mapped with the oe DV. Would it be a bad idea to fit an after market blow off valve. I run without a DV at the moment but it keeps blowing the front mount pipes off. I have a forge VTA kicking about and just wondered if it would be ok to use it or should I go back to my oe one.

Personally I would stick with the oe one, the car will be a much better drive than fitting the vta, been there done that and learnt the hard way. If you run a td05, you can run no dv at all, that is what I have done on my car.

Back to the oe one I think, can't say I'm 100% happy with the ways it feels running with no NV at all.

Makes no difference which dump valve you run with the SimTek, being MAP based.
The answer to your problem doesn't lie in the dump valve anyway, you need to sort the intercooler pipes out.
They shouldn't blow off if they are fitted correctly with decent clips and flanges on all the joints.

Lack of swageing the top pipe needs to be cut to make it fit the early Impreza. There is no problem running with the oe dv but running without any dv blows the pipe off now and then. The pipe coming off is not a real problem I can fix that I just wondered if running an after market VTA would upset the mapping.

I would assume the blade construction material is similar to the vf34 and 35 which both work fine with no dump valve.. bearings should be upto it..

If you mean the jerkiness than can occur with throttle transitions, that would be rectified with Simtek. IIRC The jerkiness is an artifact of the maf, which the simtek dispenses with.

depending on your budget i'd have a solris over a simtek anyday of the week, but does come out more expensive however, so depends on if you want a better ecu at a higher price

Nothing wrong with the SimTek, we heard all of this when it first came out, Apexi this Motec that, the SimTek is a piece of junk and so on and so forth.
Following this all but one of the mappers who slated it have switched and have fitted many since.
It is a very capable value for money ECU.
We have sold loads on all sorts of spec and never had any issues with either capability or reliability.
From what I understand the Solaris is a high end Motorsport ecu, is that what the OP requires.?

didn't mean my post as an attack on the simtek martyn in anyway shape or form, it seems to be a good bit of kit and is cheaper than the solris.

as i understand it the solaris falls right between the price of the motech and the simtek (around £1500 ish), has no adverse affects (other than the normal ones with a stand alone ecu), has same/additional features as the simtek/motech but has a higher processing speed than both of them.

what i was trying to say that you have several choices, cheapest isn't always the best but just the same as most expensive isn't always the best.
