Default Lambda O2 Sensor Question

Right, slightly puzzled here. Failed MOT on emmissions, high co2 so replaced lambda sensor, lasted about 30 miles and AFR was showing lean to nothing most of the time, got a replacement FOC and replaced again, this time sensor lasted about 600 miles and now AFR is once again showing lean to non existant.
Is there a common cause that attriutes to the lambda failing?
The only things i can think of is that when i arrive at work after a good 50 mile of Lincolnshire 'A' roads the entrance is very pot-holed and of course the holes are full of water, would the sudden shock of the cold water hitting the header and sensor cause the sensor to fail (expansion and contraction)??
Thanx in Advance, Steve.
