Hello,

If the rain stops I want to get my Impreza on some axel stands at the back this evening... can I jack it up on the obvious rear diff or am I going to damage it?

Will the axel be okay with axel stands holding the weight of the car?

Just need to aid access to the rear underside...

Unfortunatly I don't have any ramps... although thinking about buying some as it might be less hassle.

Cheers for any help

JGM

Dunno about jacking the diff as I always place the jack under the loadbearing triangular shaped metal plate thats just infront of the rear wheel.....and when jacking the front I use the two chassis rails for the axle stands and have had no problems.

okay but the triangular plate is on either side of the car andI need to jack the whole of the back up to get the axel stands under... as jacking one side and adding stand and then jacking the other is not a good idea..

I shall have a look when I get out there later but just thought someone might know before I break something..

As I understand it if you jack one side and put the axel stand under and then remove the jack the axel stand is likely to slip as you jack the other side. Just one of the no no's I thought there was with using axel stands... is also printed on the box my axel stands came in as a don't do.
I believe it is best to jack the back of the car up equal height then add both axel stands at once.
But it sounds like I can out the axel stands on the metal triangle, except if you use that to jack it up how do you put the axel stand on it?

I suppose I could jack up both sides indipendently one side with trolley jack and other side with subaru jack and then add the axel stands..

Cheers for views...

its because the jack doesnt go straight up but goes up and then back towards the jack

this tends to pull the car over slightly, but also causes problems when trying to jack it off the stands and then back down (as unless you get it spot on the car will try and slip off the jack and you will either here a BANG as the jack goes through the floor, or have to risk dropping the car quickly be releasing the jack pressure, think quick though as it may decide for you!

always jack at the back if poss or use a decent garage jack that doesnt get so high it starts to come back on itself like a Halfords jack does

just thought as I have a towbar fitted there must be asomewhere there I can jack it... then put the stands on the triangular plates on either side... then also the axel will hang down giving me more room to get the backbox off as it goes over the axel I think.

Currently think I might just go to an exhaust place and ask them to swap the zorst over for me... far less hassle..
but I like working on the car myself.....

Why jack under the diff when you can jack under the centre of the rear crossmember, immediately to the rear of the diff? - and avoid stressing the diff mountings. Admittedly it's a tight fit but my trolley jack fits here and does not foul the diff.

I've sawn a groove in 2 wooden blocks and use these on axle stands under the normal jacking points. The groove locates them and protects the sill flange.

Chock the front wheels.

Edited to add chock the front wheels.

If you are jacking under the rear diff, just place a small piece of wood between the jack and the diff

Cheers guys... I managed to get the rear of the car high enough on the towbar to add the axel stands on the sills... triangular bits..

Took ages to get the damn two bolts out of the exhaust but the STi item is not hanging out of the back of my car

I am impressed with the reduction in Turbo lag and power is definitly delivered better, not neccessarily more power but it is put down better.. sounds is improved too

Cheers

If you can buy or borrow some ramps, it's a much safer way of doing it.

I have a spare set if you wanted to pick them up. dunno where u live though.

Beats abuse from the neighbours for lying under the back of the car rubbing the big pipe!!!

Be proud and jack up the back of your Impreza

I've found that most ramps have too steep an angle to fit under a Scooby. The bumper usually fouls the ramp before the wheel....

In fact, I looked and couldn't find a decent set anywhere, even had the same situation with the Polo (the "other" car). So I cut some angle iron up and made my own. Works well...only one problem...they are so heavy I can barely lift them!
