high oil pressure
hi,
i have a 99 impreza turbo and it has an after market oil pressure gauge which for the last year has pretty much constantly only read 3bar. yesterday however it started reading 6-7 bar and sometimes off the gauge which maxes at 7 and whenever i start it up it rises to this pressure over a few seconds.
i have been told it could be a faulty gauge but i have a feeling it is something else. Its on 86000 miles and hasn't had an oil change since 75000 so i am considering doing an oil/filter change in case the filter is blocked and it needs one anyway, but i don't want to risk doing that only to find its something else and have to drain my new oil out. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced anything like this and what it turned out to be or any useful information as i'm not the best with cars.
Thanks for any help

it usually reads around about 3 all the time even when i've been driving it for ages (the gauge reads from 1-7) now it reads about 7 from start and when i rev it can goes off the gauge.

The pressure on cold start should be 7 bar at idle, more when the revs are up,which puts it off the gauge on mine. This is correct.Once the cars warm, the pressure drops to 3bar at idle, again rising to about 6-7 when revs are up.
If the wire on the sender is shorting to earth, the gauge will read max.Check this first.
