Question classic v6 sti, crank question/Maybe something strange???

I changed my crank pully the other day, and i noticed that there was no woodruf (spelling) key in the crank.

there is a cut out for the woodruf key to go on the pully, and the new pully had a cut out for it as well.

but the end of the crank, there is no woodruf key. I dont mean it has fell out etc, but there is no marking/space at all for it.

At the end of the crank, there is a hole for the bolt, and the end of the crank is round, with no cut outs/marks for the woodruf key at all.

is this normal??

Check carefully its not sheared and as such the key way is obscured.

I had similar when i removed 5th gear looked as if there was no key but on close inspection it had sheared of and filled the hole. It tapped out fine though and was replace no problem.

All the cranks have a woodruff key slot machined in them - the key also holds the cam belt crank gear in the correct position.
If there was no key and keyway in the crank, the crank timing belt gear would not turn with the crank with obvious results.

Half the length of the key locates the cam belt drive gear and the other half
locates the front pulley to the crank - not many engines use tapered pulleys any more.

what do you think is best to do, the new pully is on, and running true.

shall i just leave it, or is it best to put a new one in, and how would i go about doing this?

Best to check whats left of the key - if the front pulley bolt comes loose, the spinning/slipping front pulley could damage the snout of the crank.

will have to have a closer look, when i had a good look/feel the other day, it was smooth, and could not see any marks where the key would of been at all.
(no dirty jokes please )

A few pics of what the key should look like :

You should have approx. 5mm of key to locate the crank pulley to the crank.

unless it was at the bottom, and i didnt see/feel it propley.

when i put the pully on first and tighten up, it wobbled all over the place, took out bolt, then put back in, and re tightened, then it run true.

maybe i didnt have it located right, then it wobbled into place?

thanks for the pics Mick
