TD05 16g vs VF34...
Hey guys, hoping to get my car upto around 300-320bhp with similar if not more torque.
Which turbo would be best?
I will be running a 2002 WRX 2.0L, with full decat exhaust, STI TMIC and will get a remap once it's fitted.
Cheers

I would go for an 18g personally.
Out of those i would say VF34, these can be source new from the states for £500 with the current exchange rate, mark the shipping value as $20 or something so you skip the import tax and duty.
Be sure if you do go for a 16g, its an Andy Forresy supplied unit, not forced performance or other cheap substandard imitations. you will also need a fuel pump and 550cc injectors so as to not comprimise and drivability...

VF35 can be had cheap, will do low 300s nicely. TD05 16G, front entry converted will also do the same job, but may not be as easy to come by. If you get the conversion done, you might as well have an 18G built.
Unless I'm pretty out of touch here, there's nothing wrong with FP turbos. JA Warehouse on ebay are crooks but everyone knows that anyway. FP are not 'cheap substandard imitations'.

We just fitted an FP Green HTA to a new 2.5 build. Early days mapping on our dyno produced 330 bhp and 360 ft lbs on only .6 bar!
We think it'll fly on 1.6 ..

VF34 or 35, the latter can usually be had rather cheaper, both spool very well and comfortably produce low-mid 300s with appropriate supporting mods, sometimes a bit more.
18G will, mapped to its potential, most likely kill your gearbox. Even with the VF34/35 there are no assurances it won't go: current condition/future use and mapping are big determinants

You'd need an uprated fuel pump, not sure what injectors the 02WRX has, 380s would be inadequate to make the most of the turbo, 4440s would do, 550s better.
When you upgrade the turbo, best to assume the std clutch is on borrowed time; many start slipping during the mapping.

Its what i have heard from various project threads and techinical threads over the years. Claiming they have failed, or spool later, or have not achevied the desired figures.
But no, there is nothing stated in black and white saying that they are officailly substandard, and people will only post bad reviews as apposed to good.. granted.

440's can do the job (just) but your best off with 550cc's...

Dont write off the 16G its a good strong little turbo.
I got mine from Andy Forrest and I'm running standard UK internals on a MY99 RB5.
TD05 16G
PE 550 Injectors
Walbro 255
Fuel Lab FPR
Graham Goode Induction Kit
Hybrid GT FMIC
Full Decat (Hayward & Scott D/P and Nur Spec R System)
ECUTEK3 Remap by Bob Rawle.
