Well ill be the first to say its not worth the time or effort, which it isnt, will cost you exactly the same money as a turbo insurance wise once you have declared everything and will be no where near as good.
Best thing to do is to sell this one and buy a turbo version (unless you want to replace half the car )

Well id expect you to be spending around 4-5k to get it up to the standard of a turbo, you need uprated internals, exhaust, gearbox, clutch, rear diff (with disc brakes and not drums) front brakes etc etc etc etc, see where it gets expensive?
Cheaper to go out and buy a nice 60k my99/00 car for 4k and spend 1k on getting it up to scratch

Example here
Auto Trader UK - SUBARU IMPREZA 2.0 Turbo 4WD 4dr Saloon
Buying this will be considerably cheaper than buying a sport then trying to convert it
And you will have money left over to get this into A1 condition

The EJ20 NA engine is nothing like the EJ20 turbo, its SOHC to DOHC, different pistons etc etc
You'll need to swap the front x-member to clear a clutch capable of taking turbo power as well as engine, chassis and running gear mods.
, that's not insured, thats having a valid cert, make a claim and I suspect you'll rapidly find you aren't insured at all as the car is not as described!

didnt say i insured it that way mate just said thats what it is on the log book and if the guy is going to do all this work to his scoob i dout he will be telling the insurance company or else he would be better off buying a turbo in the first place no!!!

right so what is it that was so bad about what i posted that gives you the right to call me an **** you **** i was only stating that thats what its on the log book just like so many import cars out there and i can bet you that most of them are insured as what it says on the book

I cannot believe people still consider this as a viable option.
Save yourself a sh*t load of time, hassle, money and just go and buy a turbo model. It will cost you more doing the conversion than the increase in the insurance for the turbo will.
If you go ahead with the conversion you're a fool to yourself

My import was indeed the same, it read only as 'Impreza'. None the wiser I got my insurance dealt with. When all the paperwork came back I looked at the details and as you say there was my car listed as a GL model. I queried this with the insurance company, I asked what would happen if I needed to claim or worse still, I was involved in a fatal collision. Reading between his jargon the answer basically was 'You'd be fcuked up the ar$e sir'.
