Default installing a blow off valve?

I had a question about adding an atmospheric b.o.v. I was wondering if you need to get the ecu flashed when you install one. The reason im asking is because when i had my nissan 180sx and installed a bov it just cut out every time you let off the gas

Everything I've read about BOVs on standard Subarus is that they are worse than the standard recirc valve. This is because the engine management expects the air to be recirculated, and if it does not get recirculated it ruins the fuelling.

Its something to do with the position of the sensors in the system that assumes the recirc is fitted. All the posts on here that I've read on this subject indicate that fairly standard cars with BOVs have loads of issues.

I get the impression that a hugely reworked car might benefit, but I guess that would include changes to the engine management - and I would imagine those changes would involve more than a simple remap.

Other more knowledgable members feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

From what I gather, hesitation and in worst cases turbo damage.
