fitting a 2.2 into my 2.0 turbo.... need help!!!
Hi i have a my2000 uk final impreza classic turbo, my engine is fine having done only 42,000 miles and allways been serviced well.
there is a twin turbo engine at my mates that i can have and put in my impreza if i want. he says its a legacy 2.2 twin turbo engine, i saw the car it came from it was sure an old legacy automatic and for sure there is 2 turbos on the engine.
my problem is i just phone a respectable subaru breakers to find out which engine costs more to buy... my 2.0 or the legacy '2.2 twin' but im suddenlly told.......... the legacy twin turbos are 2.0 !!!!!!!!!!!!! whats this then... does this mean the '2.2 twin turbo' ive been staring at is not actually a 2.2 and im just putting a worse engine in than the 1 i have allready? if its not a 2.2 then its pointless!!!! my mate tells me the engine IS a 2.2, he says its the same as the impreza 22b engine (obviouslly with a few different bits).
please help me... whos talking ****, my mate or grade a subaru specialists. any help appreciated befor ei swap my engine for an older 2.0 thinking its a 2.2... or DID they make a legacy 2.2 TWIN turbo in about 1993

The legacy twin Turbo had the EJ22T block which is incredibly sought after and is the basis of most of the Big power builds as its a 2.2 Closed Deck Block
The block halves on their own are worth about £800. Buy it!!!
The easiest way to tell is to look at the block itself. On the right hand block half (left if you are standing in front of the car) just where the 2 block halves meet it will either be Stamped EJ20 or EJ22. If its EJ22 Buy Buy Buy!!!!!

great stuff mate thanks my current engine is an ej20. im goin round to the garage now to have a look what it says on the twin turbo block of the '2.2'.
seems u know your stuff mate so if i was to say i want to fit the 2.2 (if it is that) and run it on just 1 massive turbo how much trouble am i going to run into during the job. i was going to fit a 6paddle clutch new flywheel, my stainless racing exhaust manifold, bigger inlet manifold... and a massive turbo off somethin (any ideas). will my ecu be good for this engine change, im not in a rush to do this conversion if the engine is the 2.2 twin turbo ej22, being a perfectionist all that matters is that its worth it at the end.
thanks for your help so far anyways... appreciated!!!

You need to make sure that it is a closed deck block, and not a 2.2lt normally aspirated "open deck block" that has been converted at some point.
Both blocks will have "EJ22" cast into them.

There wasnt a factory 2.2 TT, AFAIK only tommy kaira built some 2.2 in the 98 -03 legacys.
Either its one of those or its been stroked from 2.0 or someones thrown a lot of money at it converting a EJ22 to a TT

total confusion!!!!
ok thanks for the help this is wher eim upto...... the engine out of the legacy (i saw the legacy befor ethis exact engine came out so it is from legacy around 1993 (ish). the engine DOES HAVE 2 turbos on it as they are still bolted on it ive looked........ the block IS an ej20 NOT an ej22, my mate who has the engine knows that the normal 2.2 would be an ej22 .... apparentlly there is some documentation saying this engine is NOT the original engine the legacy came with but has been added at some point before it was imported.
so my mate says the engine is bored!!!!! he seems convinced its as close as i will get to a 22b engine and says im mad if i dont want it instead of my 2000 ej20 standard uk.
im so confused why couldnt the block just have ej22 stamped on it how the hell do i know if its a 2.2 when its got ej20 on the block, my mate mentioned someting about it may say 2.2 on log book. do i take the risk??? oh 1 thing to get clear... the engine owner is not trying to con me as this engine is not costing me a penny, its lying about since he sold his classic (mrs made him) before he fitted it to his. anyone heard about these '22b' '2.2 ej20 twin turbos'?????????????
my engine = 42,000 miles his 2.2 ej20 = 21,000 miles with fsh

You have three choices.
1) Fit it and see how it goes.
2) It's unlikely to be over bored, but you could easily check the stroke, to see if a 2.5lt crank has been fitted. Just remove a spark plug, and measure between TDC, & BDC. Or take a head off, and see what it actually is.
3) Thank him for the offer, and leave it.
