Default Boost drop off on TD04

Hi, does anyone with a boost gauge / controller know if it's normal for the TD04 turbo to have a lower boost level high up the rev range?

Mine hits 1.2 bar fairly quickly at 3000rpm and holds it until around 5500 rpm, then it falls quite a bit down to around 1.0 to 1.1 Bar ish.

If I set up the boost controller for more Gain, unfortunately it just wants to spike.

Is this normal for the TD04?

Thanks

td04's are small turbos, they will not be able to flow enough air to maintain boost at high rpm. 1 bar at 7000 rpm is pushing the little turbo to its limit and is running at its worst efficiency. It does however, benefit with good boost at low rpm, giving good torque values.

as said tiny turbo, no grunt.

options are to put up with it, or chuck a bigger turbo on, say a vf35 or vf34, td05 etc etc

my TD04 came in 2.5k full decat and mapped, 1.3 bar run off .7 bar at 5800revs changed to VF34 all way to red line with lots more
The td04 is ok for the standard car, but if you intend to mod change the turbo.
As the td04 is the weakest link

thanks for the info, am pleased it's normal for it to be doing that. Am quite pleased with how it goes though for the small turbo so will probably still keep it anyway

Thanks for all your replies. The graphs are very useful Tidgy, cheers. I dug out a graph from my car to compare and the power output, as well as the shape of the curve was very similar. surprisingly my torque curve is different though as it doesn't produce its maximum torque until 3500rpm ish.

Thanks Neil XR, that's interesting to know the characteristics of a standard car on a TD04. I guess if it's remapped then we experience it reaching a high boost level then dropping off as it gets high up the rev range as it's out of the Turbo's comfort zone.

If funds although one day I might get a better turbo and supporting mods but I'll have to stick to the TD04 for now.

Was thinking about the TD04 again earlier. As its natural characteristics are to tail off high up the rev range is that what it safest for the turbo?

For example, on my electronic boost controller I could change the settings so that the Gain prevents the boost from dropping so much high up the rev range. It is harder to control though, as it just wants to spike its boost.

This may be a question that only mappers would know, but when a car equipped with a TD04 is remapped would it be mapped to hold the boost high until the redline, or to tail off?

To keep things safe, I've set mine up so it boosts to 1.2 Bar then tails off to just over 1.0 bar at the redline. I do not know what boost it was remapped to though at Zen Performance.

thanks
