I would recommend the standard OEM paper filter for this model. My MY99 had a green panel filter in the airbox before but I now use the standard filter and I cannot tell any difference in the performance. I think if you really do want an aftermarket one then the Green one is the best around.
Steer clear of most others, particularly ones which need oiling, as this can damge the VERY fragile MAF sensor on the MY99 / MY00 models.

if your car is not / very mildy modified then yes, the original paper filter will be fine. The green cotton filter on the other hand is a good upgrade and I ran one for months with no problems. infact, i have a my99 and have had the same maf for 3 years with various induction kits on with no ill effect to the maf. read into that what you will.

There is nothing wrong with the O/E pannel.
I tested four filters on the same day and again the following day as results were not as expected. The power spread was less than 2 bhp.
The filtration ability was something else.
I use K+N if it is a car I am keeping, simply because it is reusable.
Avoid any filter that does not give good filtration as it has a wide mesh or weave and I certainly avoid metel gause type filters.

The Green panel filter needs cleaning and oiling as well. This isn't an issue if it's done properly, not over oiled and 'blotted' afterwards to remove any excess.
