Default oil catch tanks

this might be a dum question but hey, with oil catch tank you get the tank with two conectors, one is fotr thr pipe that you would conect to the plastic pipe joining both breather things but what gose on the other like?a filter or something?

it vents to the atmos via a breather filter, you will probably find you will need to T in the crank breather and block off the PCV valve before you get anything in the tank mind

in simplistic terms:
there are 3 breathers to an ej20.
The 2 cam breathers, 1 each side on top of the rocker cover.
The 1 crank breather, to the right as you look at the turbo head on.
All 3 need to vent to the catch can, but you need a vent from the catch can to allow the pressure to disperse.
So in effect you need 4 outlets to the catch can, oh and a drain point at the bottom is also bloody handy.
Catch can should ideally be about 1.5 or 2 litres

As above if you only connect rocker cover side then it won't blow by the gases meaning the catch can will just look pretty and not function. The idea is to "catch" the dirty oil and return the clean air. Peanuts has it in one

Iv been reading this thread with great interest, you say you need a catch tank with 4 outlets, will this be a custom jobby? or can you just use a "T" peice as most tanks only have 2 outlets....

and secondly you advise of a 1.5 or 2 litre tank, why is this? how much oil should it be catching?

im a little confised.

Cheers

I fitted my oil catch can where the original EVAP canister used to be. I also had 3 ports on the tank, one to rocker cover breathers, one to crank-case breather, and then one to atmosphere with no filter. Really easy to install mate. Give me a pm if you struggle.

You dont need it to be that big. It collects a fair bit, as the breathers are venting warm vapour from the engine. This causes condensation. What is collected in the can will be a mayo type gunky mess.

Cheers guys, just had a look at the RCM one, nice bit of kit, but looks like it will be akward to drain when it gets full....

do you have to remove the inlet manifold to fit a catch can?

from what i remember it is a 1 way valve that opens up at a set pressure/vacume.

some people take it out and use a big bolt to replace it, i couldnt find one the right thread, so i just jubled a bit of hose over it with a bung in the end. job done.

I thought you were meant to retain the PCV valve and block off the vent into the inlet manifold leaving the PCV to vent directly to the catch can?

If you only vent the cam cover breathers to the catch can you'll hardly catch any oil.....if any???

Exactly, virtually all the oil vapour comes out of the crankcase breather. Also a good idea to retain your PCV too.......

So then, just to clarify, you've blocked your crankcase beather at the PCV and are getting oil vapour from your cam breathers????

Is there any adverse problems in blocking off the PCV?

Has anyone got a nice little drawing for nuggest head here, who is struggling to figure out what hose to cut into and join up?

I've got a three outlet can, one venting and two for connections somewhere?
