Default Noooooo ... i selected the wrong gear!!!!!

ok so my car has been quite some time getting it sorted, various issues etc. but finally after aquiring a 98 UK2000 in December with a blown engine i transplanted my 96 RA engine and various bits i had already purchased into the car, got it MOT'd & Taxed Mapped with a new Simtek ECU and was on the road.

Day 1 MONDAY drove to work fine but was far too harsh on the HKS suspension i was trying from my other shell.

Day 2 TUESDAY was much better with factory shocks on, exhaust fowled drive shaft a little so moved when back home.

Day 3 WEDNESDAY was fine, on my way to work, 5 mins from home

just down the slip road on M42 J10 and accelerating to hit the motorway at speed.

Hit Boost and went to shift up into 5th, got 3rd Very quickly hit the rev limiter and got the engine warning light. Immediately went from 3rd to 5th and it seemed to calm.

a few meters along the motorway there was some engine noise and the engine warning light.

I dropped it into neutral and coasted onto the hard shoulder, it then sounded a lot worse like a bag of spanners inside the engine.

Loaded onto the back of a pick up truck and back home to the garage where it now rests

It starts up, not as instantly as it used to and it does sound bad, but it's only been on for a few seconds as i'm V worried.

Your thoughts on what has gone ever so Pete Tong please gentlemen......................

also can i check anythign without doing any more damage to the engine ??

There are no visible signs of damage, no oil leaks, cracks, smoke, steam etc.

It's a 96 RA (CDB i believe) that had done approx 40k.
TD05 FE modified
550 injectors (parralel setup)
walbro pump
SX FPR
MRT clutch
Fidanza Lightened flywheel
Groupe S SS Exhaust Headers
TSL Firestorm System (downpipe, mid, back)
Reversed inlet manifold
Front Mount Intercooler

.....cant think of anything else at the mo.

(and can i get it back on the road for the McRae gathering)
If it's FUBAR i'm tempted to go Forged etc.

Cheers
Minty

sorry to hear of your bad luck

could be anything at the mo, just wait for the garage to call you and let you know whats wrong. with the massive over rev i think you will be seeing bent valve's at a minimum really, but i hope its something silly like its jumped a tooth on the belt.

someone i know did this and it cost him a whole engine and gearbox. fingers crossed you will be lucky.

if the garage is any good they will get you back on the road with plenty of time for you to come to the gathering.

If you have over revved it like that and got 3rd from 4th instead of 5th and fully released the clutch, i would suspect you have maybe had the cambelt jump a tooth, and had valve to piston interference.

I personally wouldnt start it agian, with out manually puting the cambelt to reference timing position and also doing a leak down test.

If a valve has snapped, rather than bent, then god knows whats happened in there. My engine got totally destroyed by doing something similar at donington last year.

Fingers crossed, but DO NOT start it again until you have done the above

Here were the consequences of my over revving incedent shortly after I converted from a five speed to six speed on my RB5. Coincidently mine was done going for 5th and selecting third by mistake.

It was a £12000 mistake, a lesson I've never forgotten and the start of my DIY tuning career !!

I hope yours isn't so fatal.

Daz

part of me would like to do this myself, but equally i would like it done fairly quickly if i am spending money on it as i'd like to make the end of the month if poss.

Do i order the bits for a forged re-build (costs ????)

or do i send it to Zen ?

Its either get it back on the road asap via Zen or similar or buy a cheap diesel and tackle it myself, i'm just not too sure if i will be going in over my head with an engine re-build.

The other stuff which i have done....engine swap, rotate inlet etc isnt as precise a science as a re-build and i dont want to mess is up and have to have it re-built again in a week as i messed up when building it. But i would like to be able to build one too hmmm

Pull the plugs out and see if they are battered to death on the tips will give an idea if it’s trashed the pistons and heads

it hit the rev limiter i know that much and i got the engine warning light but i was just straight onto the clutch and into 5th so i'm not certain i guess the rev limit.

The rev limit does nothing when its caused by downshifting so it probably went much higher especially if you where giving it some when you did it.
You can roughly work it out if you know what revs you where pulling as you started to change gear but its really down to how fast your left foot was on the clutch.

Let's say it buzzed 10K rpm (which is probably on the conservative side) Your crank is rotating at approx 167 times a second. No matter how quickly you're on the clutch the damage would have already been done.

oh, and now just imagine what selecting 1st from 8500rpm in 2nd can do to a 2.35 build with a ppg dog box.

Then imagine what 1st from 8500rpm in 4th does to a 2.35 build and ppg dog box.

Then imagine both those happening in 3 months, with a bearing failure in between. Now your close to how i felt between April and July 2007

Yeah i think so.

it feels ok compression wise turning it by hand but who knows what has gone, i'm thninking big end ??

Unfortunatly i had already planned V festival with the guys for a large gathering this weekend. I did considder pulling out but i feel like i need a beer or 12 now.

Anyway i have monday off and so might see if i can drop the engine off the Zen on Monday or Tues and leave it with them. Ideally i'd love to get it back on the road for the McRae gathering but i cant dictate that now i guess.

I haven't had chance to speak to Paul yet, i'll have to PM him again.

It's either get the whole car down there or whip everything off it and drop the engine down there.

I'm also thinking i might have a longer 5th gear fitted into my RA close ratio gearbox while i'm having the work done to aid my motorway driving.

Have they mastered the Ikyea shifter unit yet, i know that Zen are agents but they were also having issues with it and the gearbox moving under load.

It's a thought to try and prevent this happening again.

Quick Reply: Noooooo ... i selected the wrong gear!!!!!
