You can never guarantee what engine it has,as it's 15 years old,and an import,it may have been changed.
As said above, check under the alternator to see if the block has the cross hatching first.

Out of the factory the internals were not forged, forged internals only on the STi models (v2 upwards i think), wrx's are cast.

What is a closed deck block and how is it better than a normal block?

My 94 has what appears to be cross hatching right behind the alternator/ac pump, looks like a bunch of crosshairs to me so id assume she is a cdb?

The WRX heads have cross hatching also,so nothing special about them unfortunately - it just helps heat dissipation on the surface of the heads.

Defo forged on the right. Forged pistons are smoother.
The hatchings are casting marks as shown on the piston on the left.

Incedently an open deck 2.0L block is still good for over 500bhp. Stock liners on the 2.0L are fairly thick unlike the EJ257 Block

so would it make any difference if i rebuilt a cdb or odb with forged internals? or do u mean they will both make same power ratings but a cdb would be stronger?

if you're looking for around 500bhp the OD 2.0L block will be fine.

Beyond that then I'd suggest closed deck.

a closed block is much better than the standard open deck as it increases block regidity so it is able to withstand higher cylinder presures, this is why the common faults with the open deck is the head gaskets blow easily. closed deck the clear winner for higher boost applications

Also i wouldnt advise an open deck 2.0 litre for 500bhp!! Go with closed deck!!
