Question Cam belt tensioners

Just a quickie

When changing the cam belt does the tensioner/s have to be changed or is it just advisable to do it??

Cheers

If the tensioner is weak or leaking, then replace it.
If the idlers are noisy when spun by hand, they need to be replaced.

Alot of people change a servicable tensioner without bothering with the idler pulleys (especially when I find they seem to dry out more often). Thinking they are paying extra for peice of mind, when there are three other pulleys that "could" fail.

IMO, Its either replace the lot, or: Replacement is on a "as and when needed" basis.

Basically, you check the condition, and assertain it its good for another 5yrs/50K. (or 3yrs for the old models)

So if the pulley bearings feel dry, noisy when spun, or have play; Replace. Same with the pulley on the tensioner - but in addition check for fluid leakage (especially when compressing) and its ability to return to full extension after being compressed.

Personally, I find they at least one pulley needs changing by the time the second cambelt is due. ON that basis, I would be inclined to change everything on every second belt change.

You can change the whole lot if you want; It really depends on if you want to spend the extra £180. But if your changing the tensioner regardless of its condition "for safety and peice of mind" then you should be changing all the idler pulleys too.
