Default P1 turbo worries! newwwbie!

Hey everyone, before i start on the Q's just thought i would introduce myself!

Name is Rich, drive a P1, live in midlands!

OK, i have got a 2001 P1 with a noisy turbo, when you start the engine you can clearly hear like a whine, and when you turn it off you can hear it whining down aswel for about 10 seconds after - quite badly. now would i be losing power from this? because i don't feel its as fast as it should be, doesn't respond that well. I got took out in another p1 last week and it felt twice as quick as mine and he said it was standard!

The only mods are induction kit, dump valve, centre de-cat pipe.

If it is the turbo do i go for a standard replacement VF28 or do i go for the VF34?

all help appreciated!

regards
Rich

Get the VF34 if funds allow. You will need a remap after though.

If you've not already had the car mapped, then I'd be taking it easy till you do, especially with that induction kit on! P1s are marginal on 97RON as they have the STi V map which was originally intended for JDM 100RON. Many owners get theirs remapped for that reason. You can kill two birds with one stone if you get the turbo done.

Hi.. ah many thanks for that!

Personally i don't like the induction kit, i don't like the noise it makes so was actually thinking about sourcing a standard air box for it anyway. (i bought the car with it on)

What should i expect to be paying for a Re-map? as GGR has quoted £695+VAT

i was thinkin about going along the lines of having a diagnostics to see if it actually is the turbo, not some sensor playing up... then taking it from there.

oh and i was meant to say, very occassionally (about once every 2 weeks or so) the 'check engine' light comes on for about 30 seconds, but doesn't go into safe mode, could this be related??

noisy turbo probably wont caues a noticable power loss untill or even if it ever realy goes wrong...I have trucks with noisy million mile turbos with enough shaft movement to scare anyone theyr not smokey and keep on going and a turbo is a turbo I also have a forged 2.5 type R and the turbo on that is a bit noisy the problem begins when they begin to smoke at that point change it quick..

If you're in the midlands may be worth taking a trip to Paul at Zen Performance for a remap. I'd want to know what was causing that engine check light to come on first though, as would any mapper! Any subaru specialist will be able to diagnose it for you very quickly. Drive the car off boost untill then to be on the safe side. What fuel are you using?

Get a new MAF Sensor on it ASAP before you do some serious damage.

You filter won't be helping things either.

As for the whine, mine does it and I don't have any problems yet. Will wait until it reeks then i'll change it.

But whatever you do, get a MAF sensor and maybe the 1st o2 Sensor.

It'll be the cause of your sporadic CEL and poor performance.

For the sake of £70, it'll be worth it.

Then get the re-map.............

would a dodgey MAF sensor be causing a smell of petrol now and then aswel? its not all the time, only sometimes. (the car isn't used everyday)

I use 97 Ron from tesco, orr 97ron from Esso...

What is the recommended air-filter? standard air box?

GGR is closer to me, but if ZEN comes higher recommended then i could take a trip there!

thanks for all your help again, it is appreciated.

one thing that so far nobody has mentioned is that because the VF uses a roller bearing it makes a whining noise as it spins, you may not notice it with the engine running though...

Standard airbox and green panel filter will do the trick.

Best advice for you will be here though; P1 Web Owners Club :: Warning, may contain nuts!

You won't go far wrong with either of those tuners.

Start running the thing on V-Power.

As for the MAF causing the fuel smell, I'd say no.

But the symptoms you've described with poor running / feeling sluggish and it throwing up faults would lead me to say MAF.

One thing is for sure, get it booked in ASAP.

don't pay someone to read your cel, do it yourself!

Frequently Asked Questions

with the maf, it would be wise to bang a new one on if you don't know how old the current one is. the 99' on classic mafs had a tendancy to become coated with oil (especially when induction kits are used) which would then insulate the maf and cause it to give false readings, but as far as the ecu is concerned its working fine as its giving a reading so it won't throw up a cel fault. basically it becomes un-calibrated. worst case senario, engine runs lean, this causes detonation, this (if run long enough or is bad enough)causes engine failure.

Hi.. quick update.. i spoken with ZEN today and its booked in already, much cheaper than GGR! i'm not going to use it until i take it there anyway.

Standard air boxes are a bit few and far between! ebay has non, anybody know a good place to source one? Zen said i need a 97-98 STI or a 99-00WRX one.

Will keep you all updated with the diagnostics anyway!

The VF35 is definitely thrust bearing.

More info here, looks like you were right about most being roller bearing!
