Default Warning: Oil pump internals disintegrating

This is something to watch out for on high mileage engines! At 205.000 km my MY98 had developed an oil leak (which I initially thought was the front oil seal) and was also suffering from low oil pressure. When removing the oil pump, I found that ALL of the screws pictured were loose. I torqued them down with Locktite, replaced the O-ring and the front seal and refit the pump with new liquid gasket. Oil leak gone and oil pressure up from 40 PSI to 80-90 PSI.

It was only recently that the oil pressure dropped down to 40 PSI, but the engine has been suffering from low oil pressure (60-70 PSI max) at least 3 years - I thought it was due to wear.

Idle pressure at cold startup is 90 psi. I can't remember the values at 80 degc, as I read the "hot" pressures at 90-100 degc (which is the normal operating temperature for my engine): Idle pressure 30 psi, driving pressure 80 psi, max pressure 85 psi.

I was amused to see the simple design, so I decided that compared to the engine itself it had "eternal" life (a 2.5 conversion is planned)

Thats quite common for the back plate screws to come loose and the result is a drop in oil pressure and sometimes engine failure shortly after.
Glad you caught it in time.
