Does anyone know what a short engine is?

I think its just the bottom end without anything on it.

Correct just the block........long engine is block + heads

Short block doesn't include heads.

Closed deck is where the top of the block has extra webs giving support between the cylinder walls and the block casting (across the cooling channel surrounding the cylinders). On an open deck block the cooling channels around the bores are open cast. If you intend to go for big power you will need at least a semi-closed deck - i.e. an STI shortblock.
