Manually Reading ECU Codes (Classic Impreza)
Do i connect black to black, green to green
or
black to green?
reason i ask is because when black to black, green to green are together, the engine light doesnt flash, it stays on constant, but when i connect green to black i get fault codes 22 and 23, or think i do anyway, could someone clarify

Great thanks, got that sorted now, it seems i was doing the wrong thing.
I have four fault codes in total-
22, knock sensor
23, mass air flow sensor
31, throttle position switch
42, idle switch
I have asked about the first two in another thread which i am going to try sort but does anyone know how to fix the other two (31,42) and also could all these be linked together in some way.
any advise appreciated

Ah right, the car is an L reg WRX import, strange, maybe i misread the codes wrong somehow, i was doing the morse code dots dashes thing and i did record 32 (once) which is the 02 sensor which would make more sence in regards to the MAF

It can't be cleared, some models were fitted with a TPS some were not. All still check for it though. Hence why you get the fault code.
I think my understanding of this is correct as I had this explained in a similar conversation with Scott.T about a year back.

Right, took the MAF off today and sprayed and cleaned with carb cleaner, reset the ecu and that code (23 mass air flow meter) appears to have gone now,as does code 42, idle switch.
Two remain, 22, knock sensor and 31, throttle position switch, the latter i am not arsed about.
Can a knock sensor be cleaned in the same way? or is it a case of once it comes on it is fecked? if so where is a cheap place to get one from (refurbishment fine)

- Turn ignition OFF
- Connect Read Memory (Black) Connectors & Test Mode (Green Connectors)
- Turn ignition ON (engine off)
- Engine Check lamp turns on
- Depress accelerator pedal completely
- Then return it to the half-throttle position and hold it there for two seconds
- Release pedal completely
- Start engine
- Code is indicated by Pulsing Lamp
- If a fault is detected - Check ECU code
- If no fault is detected - drive the car sensible for a couple of minutes
- When the ECU has been reset the Check Engine Light will flash
- Code is indicated by Pulsing Lamp
- If this is a On/Off pulse of equal duration, this is the 'ALL CLEAR' and no fault was found.
- If this is for example 3 slow flashes and 2 fast flashes (repeated), this is Error Code 32.
- If a fault is detected - Check ECU code
- Turn ignition OFF & Disconnect Connectors
Did you reset like this? Just a thought as I am wondering if these are stored codes or new codes?

No, i did try that way with no luck, i ended up just taking the battery off for a few hours. When i started the car after connecting the battery back up the check engine light pulsed on/off of equal duration (all clear) The engine light stayed off for about 5 mins just idling on my drive, then it came back on again. So i connected the two black wires together and the two fault codes above came back again.
I will try taking the knock sensor off and giving it a clean else buy a new one.

Right i connected the green wires together and the two black wires together, the fans kick in and all the relays start going mad, the check engine light stays on (no flashing) done what you said in post #13, light is now off again, i have left it idling on the drive for now to see if they come back, will update.

On some of the early Imports there is a Throttle Pedal Switch. To find it you need to look under the dashboard, and around the pedal assembly. If I recall it is up where the throttle cable comes through the bulkhead and is a 2 pin blue plug.
Have had the joy of stripping down a 93/94 import loom to fit into my kitcar. That took my ages to work out what the plug was for Think it just tells the ecu the throttle is being operated, haven't wired it in on my new setup but can if I find is needed.
