Default Sti engines

Hi all is there anyway you can tell one sti engine from another and do they have model numbers stamped anywhere.

You can tell version numbers apart from each other in the same way as with regular WRX or Turbo 2000 engines - clues like the inlet manifold bolt pattern, rocker covers etc. The blocks all look pretty much identical from the outside except early closed deck blocks have a cross hatching on certain areas. Once you get the block apart, the STi ones will have forged pistons and the rest are just cast. Everything else AFAIK is identical.
