Default methanol!

does any body have experience of methanol?
is it a case of whacking it in the tank and map the ecu to suit? i doubt it but would appreciate all views.
the cars only being used for a few meets and running up the strip so i want to extract as much power and torque as i can. thanks.

I think that you would encounter issues with the injectors not being able to supply enough fuel at the bare minimum...

BiKE Magazine recently did an article on an alchohol fuelled sportsbike that they are building, and they had to get the fuel map so far out that the ECU was right on the edge of its tolerances. And that was with Ethanol based biofuel. Methanol has a different energy density from Ethanol and I think its waaaay different from petrol. I can't remember the exact figures but I reckon (as said) at the minimum you'll need to do something with your injectors and you won't be able to use a stock ECU.

I could be wrong of course, but Methanol is so different to Petrol that I'd be surprised if I was wrong.

speak to Martyn as he recently mapped mine to run on 10% methanol.

makes a big difference.

thanks for the reply. i had better include the engine spec so far, steel rods, forged pistons, ported heads, sti 8 manifold, full exhaust, air filter etc, apexi pfc ecu, td05 18g turbo, adjustable fuel press reg plus other stuff!
injectors still to order which is why i am enquiring about other fuels so i can order the injectors to suit.
keep it comin!!

I've got a methanol and water injection setup using an aquamist system

Saves all the hassle of mixing methanol into the petrol but more ex
pensive LOL

but methanol direct into the fuel will give a better result.

your mapper can map it with the apexi power fc, but you will have to run it all the time to be on the safe side. 10% mix is what most people tend to use.

worth using, and its cheaper to buy than v-power!

Can you use a 10% mix with the fuel on stock sti internals?

Is using a water/methnol injection safer?

Cheers,
Dale.

Using a 10% methanol/Vpower mix on my V5 typeR....I have a Simtek ecu with two maps, the other map being straight Vpower, the methanol allowed another 6 degrees of ignition advance to be put into the second map across the rev range....You certainly can feel it

Is it safe on the standard internals and how much cheaper is it overall.
I'm thinking of a second map on a simtek (when i get it) for methanol. To save on fuel prices as well as the increased performance.

it is dependant on your mapper, but no issues with mine on standard internals.

JGM should be doing mine so i should be fine.

A bloke i know who is a petrochemist says that 10% is an unknown quantity when it comes to long term affect on the internals. he suggested using 5% which is used in other vehicles and has been tested.

What do you guys think?

there a quite a few on here running with 10% methanol with no problems (st this stage).

Cant see what effect it could have on the internals though, wether standard or otherwise.

I have now had my ECU fitted (simtek) and am ready to join the Chemical generation

I have got me 2l of methanol (initially) and i believe i have just got to mix it in a container (i have a jerry can) with 20l of Super unleaded and i'm away..... is it that easy

And then i'l be ready to put it in the tank and get it mapped

Cheers
Chris

2L methanol to 18L petrol

best to get a clear jerry can, put 1L marks on it. so when you fill up, you can see how much you are putting in, then full up with petrol

So is mixing it in a jerry can the best way to do it or can you add the prescribed amount to the tank before filling up letting it mix itself in the tank ??

cheers
