Default My new Closed Deck 2.5

Went to see the engineering company that's converting my 2.0L Closed Deck block into a 2.5 Closed deck block today.

Almost finished just some final touches to do and I'll pick it up next week ready for the build to start.

Here's some pics:

The block itself:

They also adapted my phase 2 inlet manifold to allow my phase 2 heads to go into the 1997 Type r Shell with the phase 1.5 loom. This has had to be done because of the Idle Control Valve on the 1.5 manifold.

Here's what I'm going to be put into the Block.

Roger Clark Motorsport Omega 99.5mm Pistons

Roger Clark Motor Sport Arrow WRC Rods

ACL Race Series Bearings

Being force fed air by this

Finally when built everything is going in here

Will be aiming for around 550bhp when finished

Cheers

Daz

Cheers Guys,

Gearbox will be a straight cut syncromesh PPG 5 speed DCCD.
Turbo is a Garrett GT30R with the larger 0.82 exhaust housing. Going to see how fair with this. It was really nice on my stock 2.5 but only ran it at 1.4 bar. So I want to see what its like at 2.0 Bar+ before I consider going bigger.

Cheers

Daz

Are you using an RCM steel billet crank?

No a standard EJ257 crank. These are more than proven at this power level.

Seems as a monster is growing up!

Very fine parts that you are using!
How was the spool with the GT30 on 2.5l?

Looks the dogs nuts, which engineering company have you used to carry out the machine work?. As I've recently purchase a closed deck block which I wish to bore out and reline.

A local Engineering company in Doncaster. They've been going for 50 odd years and have a fantastic reputation around here.

R & E Arnetts.

Markus,
Spool was fine on the 2.5 but as I was running a stock 2.5 I never had it mapped properly as I was always to go down this route one way or another.

I saw full boost (1.4 bar) by 3500rpm. Had it dynoed and it made 452bhp at 1.4bar at 6400 rpm after which power stayed flat. I've no doubt mapped properly and running 2 bar it would have broken 500bhp.

When the new engine is put together I'm aiming for around 550bhp.

Question

This is something I'd love to try one day..

I know this might sound very silly, but do the crank bearings/shells need to be plasti-gauged to fit or are the drop in..?

I'm going to drop mine in but plasti gauge them just to be sure.

My last set of bearings I just dropped in and it was mint!!

Wish I'd gone down the closed deck 2.5 route now but didn't have the extra funding at the time, just for peace of mind really - I'll not that far off your power (when have few more mods done at API and Bob), but bet your torque figure will be mental.

She'll be a beast.

Ah, it been a while..

What happens if the measurement is out of tolerance, different sized bearings..?

Is this ever a problem with these engines when fitting std/new crank/journals/rods etc..?

Lol, I'm talking myself into trying a bulid here..

They shouldn't be out of tolerance, Subaru cranks are pretty good for that.
I've never heard of it happening but then again I'm certainly no expert!!

Daz,

I have only done cadwell once on a borrowed bike in the rain. It's a good track and the section through the woods after the mountain is superb.

Back to the topic at hand. I like the idea of the 2lt closed deck block, but wasn't aware that you could 2.5 them.

Some questions for you.

What is the process they go through to reliner it and the bore after?

Who did the work (I'm in Sheffield thats all) and what did they charge?

Which crank gives the correct stroke?

Cheers for any info mate,

Wayne.

Hi Mate,

I started with a closed deck 2.0L block. This has been bored and then sleeved using Top Hat diesel liners. The Pistons I am using areRCM / Omega 99.5mm.
The sleeves have then been honed to suit the pistons with a clearance of 3 thou. The block halves have also been decked to make sure the block - head surface us totally flat.

The block has also been machined to relocate the thrust bearing to the rear. This is to allow the phase 2 EJ257 crank which has a 79mm stroke.

Including some work to adapt my phase 2 manifold for the phase 1 idle control valve it's come in at just shy of £1000 inc vat.

R&E Arnetts of Doncaster have done the work.

So in essence its a very strong 2.5L Block.
Cheers

Daz
