Default 1.4 bar!

Got a good one here! My mate recently bought a 94 wrx fresh import.

Heres the thing, its completly standard apart from a hks blow off valve and a little box that sits in the centre console with 4 switches on it. Its branded zerosport data selector. I traced the wiring and it goes directly to the z4 ecu. On the ecu theres a sticker with numerous dates writting on it refering to some sort of mapping i can only assume.

So hes had the car about 6wks and over the time we've played with the 4 switches while driving and it seems to change the charactoristics of the car.

So i said, get boost gauge on so we can see wots going on. He fitted the gauge today and to my surprise its reading 1.5 peak settling down to 1.4!

If it is a genuine 1.4 bar it aint guna last 2mins without supporting mods! But how can it even hit 1.4 with the standard map sensor thats rated at 1.2 bar??
Imagine how lean its guna be running!!
What do you guys think?? Crazy jap mapping? Dissaster waiting to happen?? How could 380's supply enough fuel for 1.4 bar, its crazy!!!

Z4 cant be mapped! It has a spare socket on the board where you can solder a DIL socket then you can chip it or plug in a ESL board into it, (see polarperformance website for the options) so will be easy to tell if its the ecu thats been tweeked, see picture below, spare socket arrowed

I would also seriously research the Zerosport and see what your messing with, and also chech around the engine bay for such as MBCs or bleed valves etc.
Cant see it taking that much for very long, shes an old girl now, 1994

Thats opinion too!

Anyone else seen anything like this before?
The thing that puzzles me is how can the map sensor be going so high? There no manual boost controller or nowt just the standard b/c, i thought 1.2bar was the limit?

Yeah i know im familiar with the esl stuff. So the zero sport thing is some kind of board soldered into the spare slot and the box in the centre console is a switch for whatever maps are on this board. But that still dosent explain the amount of boost with standard b/c? The car is completly standard apart from this zerosport thing!

It may have a later one fitted they run up to 1.4 I think. My RA ran 1.4 bar for 2 years with no issues - it was mapped for this. They will take it with the correct mapping etc.

I expect the zerosports item could be a piggyback ecu, open up the ecu to see where it's connected inside the ecu.

Yeah its defo a piggyback of some sort, just wondering how it can be boosting so high? wouldnt you need 440's + for that kind of boost or else it would be super lean!? Its only running 380's!

As above Wideband AFR would tell you things even a cheaper narrow could point you in the right direction or even cheaper put a multimeter on the sensor wire at the ecu and read the voltage 0.1 being very lean 0.9 being very rich

I would get it sorted with that boost through standard intercooler and exhausts inlet temps be very high causing the dreaded dtonation. Prob be quicker once its running lower boost too with the heat created getting a standard car to 1.4 bar affecting efficiency.

What kind of boost gauge are you using. I used to have a cheap one that would read 1.4 even though the pfc was reading 1.2, that might explain it.

380's max out at 1.2bar (standard pump pressure)
440's max out at around 1.35bar (standard pump pressure)
The MAF will max out at 1.4bar (depending on Air filter/Induction)
The MAP sensor must have an FCD fitted to go beyond 1.2bar, or a later one fitted an Mapped for.

All needs checking an 'FAST'.

The top pic looks like a HKS FCD.
Bottom pic is a electronic boost controller.

Yep fuel cut defender, HKS one I think. Needs a bloody clean as well

You really need to get it back to standard and quick. Then get it on a rolling road to check AFR's etc.

my97 is the same but it has been mapped to run higher psi than standard due to the bigger turbo/intercooler etc.
I am surprised if its genuine boost and not leaking from somewhere without fuel cut.
