Default wot engine to build?

i blew up my motor on its 1st outing this year, only managed 40 miles ive got a closed deck 1994 ej20, i really dont know which direction to start heading in, ive thought about putting a stroker kit in either 2.2 or 2.3 but have read so many negative views about these that im really unsure now, so now im thinking of going 2.5, im aiming for the 400-450 ish area, wot sort of power can a standard 2.5 block take? if i were to go this route then i'd buy a new bare block and build up with forged bits, bearings etc, would the block be getting into a risky bhp area in standard form?
