Default Are all Crank Shaft Sensors the Same ?

I've got a 95 STI and I think I need a new crank shaft sensor. I am going to try a second hand one. Are there loads of different ones or will all WRX's be the same ? Is the part number on the top, mine shows 5830.

As long as you have a 2 pin sensor, then it is the same as all 1.6, 1.8 & 2.0 Subaru engines up until 2007

Hi Ben,

Yea we are still here, we amalgamated the motorsport dept into the main workshops & gave up being official Subaru dealers, so cannot do warranty work anymore, but we still carry out service & repair work & have access to genuine parts.

I don't have any second hand sensors, but could get hold of a new one if req'd, these are expensive items i'm afraid, Are you sure yours is faulty?

Phil, I've taken it to mates garage in Folkstone who specialises in car electrics, Andy Pearson. It sometimes fails to start when warm, but leave it 5 mins and it always starts. Andy only managed to get it not starting for a few seconds and he said he thought he saw his diagnostics registering a fault (he didn't have long to check it before it started) and said the signal was a bit wafty after it started. He also stated the engine management system was showing an old fault on the cam shaft sensor. I know none of this is proof positive but I thought it was probabley the best place to start. Ideally looking for a sensor out of a crashed car, that way I figure it's less likely to be faulty. Are they about £130 new ?

Ben,

£128 is the UK retail price for it, so a second hand one would be good if you can find one.

If you end up needing a new one then I could probably get one a bit cheaper for you from Prodrive.

You say that the system showed an "old" fault with the Camshaft Sensor.

There is no way to tell if this is an old fault or weather it was logged the same day as the test was done.

Seeing as the Cam Sensor cauld also cause your starting problems. it may be worth your while running the car for a couple of weeks & then checking for fault codes again ( this is something you can do yourself at home)
