I have bought all the bits needed to do the VF35 conversion to my 99 uk turbo and im also adding the sti top mount
thing is im havin trouble gettin an undertray, so was just wondering how crucial it is to have it and will i need the bugeye sti scoop aswell....andy f will be mapping it at the start of april so i wanted to get it sorted before then.
any comments/advice from people who have went down this route would be great.was hoping to make the 330bhp mark or so with
VF35
STI top mount
standard 440's
walbro
full deact and downpipe on the car
panel filter
FPR if needed
apexi power fc and commander
thanks

Your actually better off leaving the old intercooler on if you havent got the correct undertray as the left side of the Sti intercooler heats up as its right above the turbo and theres no cold air getting to it, in effect, heating the air youve just cooled, back up again.
This is what AndyF told me when I got mine remapped by him with my Sti8 intercooler on MY99.
Or you can do a quick fix and cut the rubber on the OE undertray so at least some cold air gets to it.
With virtually the same mods as you (only I have VF28) I got 320/320.

Wasnt too bad to fit once you work out how to get in in there in the first place!!
Cut about 25mm off the BOTTOM of the clutch master cylinder. If you cut it off the top, the lid wont fit.
I used a syringe to extract the fluid.
Remove the three bolts on the coil pack and cut about 7mm off each of the bolt holes to lower the coil pack as it fouls the Sti dump valve when fitted.
Knock hell out of the bulkhead with a big hammer to get the clearance for the intercooler to turbo y piece.
Cut about 5mm off the hose at the front of the intercooler that joins to the throttle housing. Makes it eisier to fit.
As for the mounting brackets, the one on the right will fit with some subtle bending and a few extra washers but the one on the right(drivers side) nees an extra bracket fabricated. Up to yopu how you want to do it but I went down the "whats in my toolbox that would do" route and used a 1.3SR Nova alternator mounting bracket which fitted beatifully with an extra hole drilled in it.
Also the MY99 intercooler to turbo black corrugated hose didnt fit but I did have a bugeye one lying around that did.
Took me an hour or two to fit the first time and get it all to stop rubbing here and there. Now it can be taken out and back in in 10 mins.
Still havent bothered with an undertray. I just cut the end of the rubber off from under the bonnet.

I ran with an STI 8 intercooler and no undertray for a while and didn't have any problems.
I fitted a tempsensor between the throttle body and intercooler and never saw a temperature above 35 degrees on a full run through the gears.
This was on a MY99 uk with a VF28 mapped to 1.4bar tailing to 1.2bar.
I did do the throttle body coolant mod though which really helped at standstill.
Fitting a modified STI 8 undertray helped but only marginally maybe 2-3 degrees.

Got myself a STi8 undertray c/w seal from Jap Performance Parts, and simply cut the outer edge to the same shape as the original STi5 one, then made a good smooth seal to the bonnet and scoop, used black silicone sealant and self adhesive foam strips to do this [not seen in these pics]....

Then opted for the STi7-alike scoop from D.R Motorsport to suit the Classic...

It works really well Barry, Andy F had no problems mapping with it on.
Its from Carl Davey Carl Davey, specialist Subaru Impreza parts supply.
I was the test mule, But running happy at 400 no problems with intake temp.

Linking the two pipes together so that the water from the radiator doesn't flow around the throttle body.
See here Sheffield Scoobys :: View topic - Removal of the Throttle body coolant pipes
Maybe not the best for the really cold days in winter
