Not a good idea if your thinking of doing this long term. If your car gets rear ended..............you could be toast!

If you have to carry fuel it might be safer to get the smaller metal (10Lt) jerry cans.

I know exactly what you are trying to do and why

I dont know the solution though Ian short of fabricating a small cage (or two) that will hold them secure.

I very much doubt that but happy to be prove wrong if you can show me the ruling.

What is the point of jerry cans then?

why not use a motocycle cargo net to secure your container in the boot .

Motopart Luggage Net - Blue

if your not wanting to make a cage to keep them in i'd either use velcro or get rid of spare wheel and sit the cans in there

Scoobynet Muppets strike again....

Ian - no different to that or the flamable brake fluid, or the battery acid or ....

Cars are dangerous but then we know that.

Bearing in mind the use of it, I would make a solid cage for a can of two behind the firewall similar to this kind of thing for the jerry cans:

that looks good, wonder what other people do, who want it for the same use?

When the back end of my last BM fell in love with a pretty solid hedgerow

the fuel tank was crushed but did not split, however the contents of the boot and the boot floor were well messed up, there is no telling what forces areat work during a collision!!
Not being funny or clever mate but is worth the risk for a few ltrs of juice

point one no mater what can u use the car is most definatly gona stink of fuel
point two unleaded is highly carsonagenic as in not good for sprogs! but if you really feel the need to carry fuel when i do track days i take extra fuel in the spare wheell well 2, 5lt containers each in a couple of bin liners and leave the window open and i can still smell petrol the next day when i get in the car. i find the square black ones for diesel are best cos its easier to wedge them in and they dont toppel over.. but as has been said its a bad idea! i prefer to keep some nf octane booster just in case i get caught short..
