what block is it going into?

Reason for asking is that it might work out almost the same price to get a brand new 2.5 STI short block and then just replace the pistons in it. It's got forged pistons already and the crank, bearings etc would be brand new.

Your heads and ancillaries should fit straight on.

The 2.5 STi engine does not have forged pistons as std but in std form it should stand 400/420

By using 2ltr heads on a 2.5ltr you will increase the compression ratio unless you use a thicker head gasket.

The block should have the same external dimensions as far as I know, so it should virtually drop right in.

It might be worth giving Mark @ Lateral a bell as he'll know for sure what you need and he's decent on price too

The lateral web site is Lateral Performance

without knowing the current spec of your car you may then want to think about

turbo
bigger injectors
uprated fuel pump
adjustable fuel regulator
better topmount intercooler or front mount intercooler
brakes
suspension

and also for definite you will need a different turbo.
If you go for a 2.5 shortblock and then use your heads then the chambers arent really matched to the block so for best result get the heads matched, this should sort out the compression.

If you post what car/specs you have then I am sure people can give more info to you

Arn't there headgasket issues with modded 2.5's... One of the main reasons I went 2.35 on a EJ22t block...

As mentioned above... You will need

Turbo... (I'd use a MD321t again anyday... awesome turbo that bolts in standard position... £1300.00)

FMIC... £200.00 upwards

Uprated turbo inlet pipe... £150.00 ish

Injectors... £400.00

Uprated FPR and fuel pump... £250.00 ish

Uprated headers, up-pipe and exhaust...

Head gasket... £200.00 ish depending on what you want... I used Cometic, I imported them from the USA.

ARP headbolts etc... £

Uprated oil pump... £150.00 of the top of my head

ECU/ Management... £800.00 - Upwards.

Uprated clutch & gearbox...

Then with any new build, I'd use new tensioners, bellts, oil modine/ cooler, plugs, rocker cover gaskets etc etc... Trust me, all the little bits will cost near £1K... It all mounts up mega quick.
All depends on how good a build you want and how reliable... I didn't cut corners on my build, for the money I layed out... I got one hell of a awesome spec for my money...

I bet if you bought a new 2.5 shortblock and built around that... If you got one for £2K, in total with the other mods you'ed easy spend £6K+ doing it yourself...
This is depending on your cars current spec, but if starting from standard... It will cost a few quid...

Head gaskets issues can easily be solved.

This is what ScoobyMania did to my heads to machine them to take O-Rings around the cylinders. Gives it more clamping force and problem goes away very cheaply.

A brand new STi short block is around £1300-£1500 complete and assembled with crank, rods and pistons so a 2.5 doesnt have to be any more expensive than a 2.0L

Things have changed abit since I did mine 2 years ago then... hmmmmmmm, 400bhp should be quite easy then...
I'll still stand by my estimate... If working from a standard car, with turbo, management, injectors, clutch etc. . . £6K+ budget is about right, if you could do some work yourself...

This is a good point, costs always end up running away, on random sundries and little tools and bits and bobs you need to buy...

When I changed my bits on my engine (still standard 2.0), I ended up spending 3400 for the parts + mapping, but then I bought tools and random stuff for probably around 5-600.

My 2.35 build...

https://www.scoobynet.com/projects-4...diy-style.html

My engine spec was:-

Axis stage 4 build... (EJ22t) 2.35
Sealed together with Cometic head gaskets and ARP studs and bolts
Adaptronics ECU
A Andy Forrester Garrett hybrid turbo MD321T (bolts in standard position)
Samco turbo inlet pipe
800cc v-port injectors
Uprated spark plus ( £130 quid for 4!!! )
Hybrid FMIC
Walbro fuel pump
Parrallel fuel mod
Cossie fuel pressure regulator
Teg sport uprated headers & up-pipe
Carl Davey inlet manifold spacers
APi baffled sump
RCM uprated oil pump
Water spray re-routed to just behind the front number plate for the FMIC
Thats the basics...

On top of the mods... every tensioner, idler, belt, gasket, oil modine, water pump etc was replaced at great cost...

Mine cost around the £8K-£9K mark...

Mine used to go well when it was still a 2 litre with a VF34 fitted...
Its gonna be something you'll need to weigh up mate... a built 2 litre shortblock will cost near 2K. So really, if you wasn't gonna wanna go for much more than 400bhp in the future, a standard 2.5 shortblock would work out cheaper...
Don't worry mate... I didn't know what to go for...
PS... the Type R aint mine anymore... Rossi P on here now owns it...
