re-map question? would i loose
hi guys my 2003 wrx sti has a centre de-cat pipe, cold air induction kit, and a forge dumpvalve, i have been told it will need remaping because i have put these mods on? also been told its over boosting because its not been maped, it feels alot faster now i have added these mods but if i get it remaped it wont be over boosting then so i will loose power is that right???? or would i loose power but gain it back to how it was when over boosting when its been maped???

I once had a guy come in with an RS turbo running 1.6 bar of spiky boost on a standard turbo. When I corrected this obvious overboost issue (it should be 1 bar max.) he complained that it wasn't as fast as it was before! I pointed out to him that his engine would have a shelf life of about 5 minutes as it arrived, and that I'd put it right back there if he wanted. He actually thought about it for a while!
The upshot of that is, there is a place where you want to be, even if you don't know it yet, and a skilled mapper is the man to get you there.

you mean they weren't doing a custom map anyway??
wrong turbo? sounds like an excuse coz they didn't have a generic map for it..
imho

generic maps are death for the engine.
Even identical spec cars behave differently so the chances of a generic map fitting or being safe for your car are one in a million.
Get it to a proper mapper, please before you are joinging the ranks of people that saying that mapping subaru's makes the engines blow up.
Mapping like Simon or one of the other recognised mappers on here does, is custom for YOUR car. They look at fueling on YOUR car, they work out the control that YOUR turbo needs, and the use that you are going to put YOUR car to. Then they map it gradually and surely til it gets to be almost as good as it can get with your components.
Yes, it takes time - that why you pay these guys - their skill in tuning the car is worth a lot and worth travelling to find a good mapper that you can then build a relationship with as you modify your car further. Who knows they may even save you money in recommending mods that you should or indeed, shouldnt do. 4 hours is nothing unusual in a mapping, my own mapping of my car is still continually refined even after weeks of use.

We all custom map them, it matters not what turbo is fitted.. it should be custom mapped to the car setup etc..
someone could using the £50 cable and free software download maps off the web that other diy tuners have posted and hope for the best..
or the other method which some dyno's use is to get another mapper to email them generic maps they have developed.. load them on the car and then ring them with power output etc and AFR's and then they send another etc
It's not a custom remap.. I don't know of any scooby tuner that does this.
When the car was overboosting.. was it hitting fuel cut? if not then it wasn't overboosting hugely and should therefore be able to custom map it to that level of boost and therefore power give or take a tiny bit.
What did the car go from and to with regard to torque and power?
Was the car checked on the road after to ensure the remap was safe?

it was established it had the wrong turbo, probably with the wrong boost control plumbing too if experience is anything to go by. However it shouldn't be difficult to make the most of what you've got, at least until a twinscroll or other upgrade was had.

just found out me engine is the uk sti gutted, yes the remaper said it was over boosting just under the cut out, who could i take it to for a good remap? also when iam doin about 80 in 5th and put foot down wen it starts to boost it feels like the turbo is strugling or the boost trying to hold back but if i keep my foot down till revs go over 5ish it clears up???? its fine if i floor it through all the gears just when i floor it and when revs are low??? the guy said sounds like coils??? but nothing coming up on diagnostics??

You're experiencing compressor surge, it can be difficult to get rid of, but with experience and good testing on the road, it can be ironed out.

Scary stuff indeed
I Know of one open source mapper who was offering his services very cheaply to the car supermarkets. He used open source software to flash the ECU to completely erase the overboost cut ! Then, even though simply winding up the boost and wastegate target would have taken another 2 minutes of his time, he puts a knife cut through the boost control pipework to induce overboost This was on brand new 2.5 WRX's. One I know of died within in 2 months due to a rod out the side of the block, another fortunately got sorted out in time (came to me complaining of inconsistant performance) although I suspect its life may have been shortened by this experience.
Generic maps are at least a step above this butcher but should be limited to virtually std cars with controlled parts fitted, this after all is what a Prodrive PPP consists of. You may however get a shock at the amount of development work that goes into that map from Prodrive in order to ensure its safe and efficient operation.

Guessing from your previous posts, you are somewhere around Stoke On Trent, There are various top notch mappers within reasonable travelling distance. Scoobyclinic (Pat?) / Zen performance. Not to mention the guys that travel..
