MY99 mpg
#1
Hopefully I'm not going over old ground too much......
Recently bought an MY99.
No matter how easy I drive it, it won't do more than 25mpg. This weekend I did a whole tank on the motorway going strictly at 70mph with almost no right foot use at all - not even down the slip roads - and also minimal urban driving at either end of journey.
When driving harder it does 22mpg (what I expect) - but if I bother to make the effort to be economical (and have a boring journey) I would like it to give me better results! It has a scooby sports backbox and an ITG panel air filter all fitted by the dealer at 1000 mile service (has now done 19k) - could these be affecting it? If the MAF sensor has been damaged by putting the air filter in would it show these symptoms?
Tyre pressures are standard. Apparently there was a smell petrol out the back of it last week (but it had only just been started and so was on the choke) - I haven't confirmed this myself yet.
I haven't had any warning lights at all.
Any pointers? - I'm always seeing people on here say it should do 30mpg on a motorway run.

whats going on here?????
Our my99 can manage 38mpg, thats 5 up and a boot full to the brim going to the South of France, ours has magnex bb, jap inovations de-catted centre and a itg panel filter.
all motorway miles, keep it between 3000rpm and 3500rpm fluctuating the speed otherwise its bad for the engine keeping a light right foot (apart from the occasional blast to remove any 205's from my bootlid :-) which turn up about 5 mins later at v-max!!!)

In my standard MY99 I get up to 28 for a motorway run, but down to (very) low 20s on "interesting" roads!
I guess making the exhaust more free-flowing improves general efficiency (as well as performance) - although this would be the least of the reasons for getting one .
Have you seen Are Scoobs REALLY thirsty??

I get 25 as well no matter what I do to improve economy. Easy to get less, impossible to get more.
I have noticed the petrol smell too, usually after a cold start then putting the car straight in the garage. Garage honks of petrol in the morning after. Must be evaporating out of exhaust pipe.
Getting on for 3 years old now and been doing it all the time, dont think therefore it is anything to worry about.

Since they dont make desiel's I assume he gets 38 Km to the Gallon??
I get 23mpg which seems to be the norm, 25-26 on a motorway run, 15 or less when driving as it should be driven!

My scooby averages around 23mpg on optimax, combined around town and motorway. ... peaks at 26ish for a gentle motorway run.
Given up working mpg out lately .... its bad enough seeing the fuel bill for 2k miles a month!

Doesnt seem to matter how I drive it, appart from booting it round the lanes where it will drop to 20.

MY00 when new in the summer with air con on returned 31.4 MPG. I had a drama with the ECU and changed it for a MY99 and it went down to 28 MPG. I agree the best speed to save fuel on the motorway is around 80 to 90 MPH.
Can get it much lower 18 MPG easy, oh and 7 MPG at Bedford
Cheers Phill C
PS ITG and Scoobysport BB

MY00, Standard ECU, 5 Zigen exhaust mid and backbox, APS cold air induction kit, Blitz DSBC (electronic boost controller) running 1.17 bar boost, I get 28 MPG driving conservatively with a few blasts, but if I give it frequently I get 21.4 MPG.
Cheers,

My MY99 is completely standard Euro-spec. Have made
records for both low and high petrol consumption. In fact
on the same trip...
Low record: 8.5 liters/100km (33mpg) driving on E4 through
Sweden at steady speed.
High record: 16 liters/100km (17mpg) driving on a German
autobahn with not-so-steady speed.
