Question

Noticed something about my driving the other day, guess I'm not the only one to do this... I'd really value some expert opinions on whether I'm doing the gearbox damage or not...

Picture the scene - slow entry second gear corner, get to the exit and plant your right foot, sit back and enjoy the power on the way out and down the straight. Look down at speedo, your at the speed limit so no point pulling another gear.
My observation is that rather than going for third (no point going any faster) I let the revs drop and slot it into forth or sometimes fifth.

Is this 'missing gears' going to trash the gearbox, or is it fine?

Wink

Thanks Christian, but it's just fine, only had this car a few thousand miles. I had a gearbox go on an old Golf a few years ago and I wondered if anyone had any thoughts - could I be storing up problems?

Can't see why - they're not sequential boxes and I do 5th to 3rd or 2nd regularly when I'm right at a roundabout and just finished braking hard.

You actually obey the speed limit?

I've done that all my driving life actually and have yet to suffer from a broken gear box (apart from my Porsche 924 auto which is another story). I doubt it would do any damage to it.

For sure I pay attention to the speed limit some of the time, after all less spent on fuel means more to give to ScoobySport eh! LOL

Katana, not surprised you knackered the Porsche if you regularly missed gears!

Reason I asked was that with the previous Scooby (N***ENO) baulked at this treatment sometimes. The shift wasn't always too smooth, the 'box not me, as if the syncro wasn't up to speed.

Rich hope your not at work still!!!

It was an automatic. I was so used to changing gears from reverse to first on a manual car that I was stupid enough to try it on my Porsche 924s without even thinking. Needless to say it would've cost more to fix it than replacing the car itself.

I hate my life. Please kill me......

This wont do any damage to the gearbox, this is known as block gear changing and although more commonly used when changing down, us truck drivers do it all the time up and down the box especially when running empty and not all 16 gears are required. As long as the speed is suitable for the gear being engaged then there should be no problem.

I do 1st, 2nd ,4th/5th depending on the speed/gearing of the car.(speed limit is 35mph here). Never had a problem.

Cool

As everyone has said I don't think there is a problem with this.

I usually go from 5th to 2nd or 4th to 2nd when taking slow junctions off a main road.

I don't think you can compare a truck gearbox to the soobie one unless your truck is AWD

As for skipping gears I don't do this often but I normally double clutch these shifts down as they are easier on the synchros. Since the shafts have to slow down, not speed up for a downshift this is not important. You may have to be a little slower so the synchros can do their job and slow that centre shaft down.
