I had the same problem, it's quite common.
I got a used one from API, about £30, I think, new ones are about £130.
They are easy to change, under the alternator held on by one M6 bolt.

Hello,i would look at your alarm/immobilzer,i get this alot at work most alarms are aftermarket on imports and have a habit of cutting out the fuel pump.
Listen as you you turn the ign to on it should prime for a few seconds.
if the alarm is not the problem check the fuel pump could be on its way out.
if a sensor is down it should bring your engine light on.
Hope this helps mate

I would say definately crank/cam sensor very easy to do mine had the same problem as yours wouldnt start when hot. It was a pain when filling up with petrol and looking like a fool cranking over for ages with nothing happening. I gambled on a 2nd hand one and i was fortunate that it worked spot on and has done since

Again same reason for the fuel pump, generally they either work or they dont although they can cause running problems by not supplying enough juice at higher rpm, but unless the car is highly modified this isnt the case (anyway it is starting and not running)
Sensor faults dont always bring the check engine light on.
Likely suspects are water temp sensor. Car is hot but the sensor is telling the ecu that the car is cold, therefore injecting more fuel (running a cold start/running map). Hence it doesnt start until a short period of time when the engine has cooled down a bit.
Cam/Crank sensors sometimes cause this fault as well. Sometimes you can clean them up and they work fine again, sometimes replacment is the only way of curing it.

good price for the insurance
Cam sensor is on the right hand side of the engine if looking at it from the front (passenger side), relatively easy to do this on, you can see if I remember correctly 2 thin wires going into the cam cover. This is where the Cam sensort is
Crank sensor I cant remember the exact location now (not got my scoob anymore) it is situated behind where the crank pulley is, cant remember though if this needs to be removed or not (think it does along with the cam covers)
Water temp sensor is a pain unless you have small hands!

I get a similar problem with my 96 WRX import. Once I unlock the car, I have about 30 seconds to turn over the ignition. If I do it after that, the car does nothing! So I have to lock the car while Im inside, unlock it again, then it turns over! Strange!

Also known as daz
But random cutting out and having to leave it 10-20 minutes usually points to water temp sensor.
No idea where it is though im presuming it's in the thermostat/water block if a scooby has such a thing somewhere.

I would start by checking the cam & crank position sensors first too, I have the same problem but im too tight to go buy a new sensor. When mine plays up us will unplug it and plug it back in and 9/10 time it will start up again.
The Cam position sensor is on the right side of the engine near the front top, it has a rust colour top & the crank position sensor is on the front of the engine just under the power steering pump, this also has a rust colour top.

Mine was doing exactly the same, changed the cam sensor and bingo!!!!
Seems the sensors over time break down when hot!
P.S. didn't throw up any error codes either. Drove me round the bend for weeks!!!!!
