Cat in Up-Pipe or Not?
I've now read & been told about 2 different UK Newage WRX STi's having Cat's in their up-pipes?
One was an 03 & the other an 05. Are these people mistaken or is it right, if so, was it just the STi8 & 9 that had them or the 7 also?

Hmm, thats what i thought
Both these two cars were STi's, the dealer told one guy that the cat in the up-pipe had been replaced for a decat and the other guy said he had removed the cat in the up-pipe for a catless type.
Confused?? I'm ot sure if I'm confused or not

I was told something similar. When I enquired what the differance was between the standard STi and the PPP exhaust the dealer told me the PPP has the middle cat removed but keeps the cat in the up-pipe.

Sorry to but in but why put a cat in the uppipe in the wrx and not the sti? It doesn't make sense if it hinders performance,is it a big job (expensive) to change to a decat uppipe for 04 wrx ppp ? Mick.

The reason for the WRX's to be fitted with cats in the up-pipe was to meet stringent emmission requirements. The first XXXX amount of cars of a new model, i.e. when the newage impreza was released, and I guess, the 2008 car will have to go through the same thing, have to meet these requirements and after that a different versin of that model i.e. the STi doesn't have to meet the same stringent emmission laws.
Having learn't that, I reckon tha is why Subaru always release the WRX before they release the STi.

I'd plan to mate this with a sports cat downpipe at a later date.
It's just that 2nd hand STI items are much cheaper than buying stainless up pipes from certain vendors. Opinions?

What Nick said, but you could contact Harvey Smith on here and see about one of his up pipes that will probably perform better than either the OE or the AM versions.

Thanks to you and Nick for the info. Any idea of how much he charges roughly? And are these things easy to fit? - I've never had the exhaust in bits - I'm guessing I'd at least need some axle stands or a pair of ramps.

Wayne, are you talking about his porting of the OE items?

Its not a bad job to do as long as the up pipe bolts are soaked overnight in WD40 for example. As stated previously, the downpipe has to come off to in ordewr to get at the up pipe bolts/nuts.
Wayne.
PS Not sure about costs of Harvey's pipes.
