Default HOW DO I REACH 360BHP???

i have a bought myself a my97 2-door type ra.

standard this car is 280bhp iv been told but my target for a couple of months from now is 360bhp.

i have a stock engine at the moment. the only mod to the car is a straight through 3" fully decat exhaust system.

what could anybody suggest to be the best route to take, to get my desired 360bhp???

this is what i had in mind....

* FMIC
* AIR FILTER
* 440CC INJECTORS
* AND A SCOOBY CLINIC REMAP
(MAYBE APEXI BOOST CONTROLLER)

if anybody has better suggestions, please point me in the right direction

cheers

I have a pretty similar setup to that (on a WRX) and it reaches 325bhp, i think you may need to change the Turbo to something a bit bigger (18/20g TD05) and maybe go to 550cc injectors.

You'll need:

FMIC (good quality)
Induction kit, K&N 57i or equivalent
550 injectors
TD05 18G and 16G or even VF34 might do it and would be kinder to your gearbox and slightly more responsive.
Ported headers
3 port boost solenoid
Uprated clutch
Remap.

Should get it comfortably then!
.
.
.
.
Oh, you may need a new gearbox not long after! Depends on it's current condition and how you drive it!

Do you NEED 360? 320ish MUCH simpler and cheaper and makes for a very quick car: I speak from experience!

personally id go

vf34
front mount
decat
cold air induction
uprated oil cooler
440 injectors

so realy add to your list oil cooler, and a bigger turbo.

and hey presto you should get 330-340 (mine got over 340 but with added autronics)

however not sure if the car is realy suited to it, wont the ra hit 120 then stop cos of gearing?

its only over 70mph the extra 40bhp makes a diference

Vf35 will get your car to 330-340 bhp.

Note your RA will be similar acceleration-wise to the Evo 8 at that power level - your car is lighter.

if i remember correctly the 1996 ra is a phase 1 engine whereas my 1997 ra is a phase 1.5.

there are subtle but noticable differences. i THINK that the turbo would've been revised too. i could be wrong

for 360 you may not need a Frontmount, you could also use an STI 8 topmount, these are good for 400bhp and keep the lag down,
as said a TD05 18G will be starting to run out of puff around 360 so maybe the 20G would be better,
it would be worth going 550cc injectors with an uprated fuel pump and an SX Regulator.
The airbox will be getting quite restrictive over 350 so a good induction kit would help it breathe.
your 3" exhaust will be fine,
the Clutch will need to be upgraded if you dont want any problems something like the Spec GT,
as for mapping you will need an Apexi Pfc or maybe a Simtek?

Default wow

the options are endless. its great to read so many different approaches to tune my car to 360 bhp

but which option is right?? it's gonna be down to each and everybody's individual experience on how they did good, or went wrong!

bottom line is... im
and bottom line is also... how big ur wallet is

and apparently my car is a v3 sti type-RA (2-door)

MY97Type RA Sti Version 3 GC8D2DD 280PS @ 6500rpm 259.8 lb ft @ 4000rpm

the type-r is in the MY98

I guess a lot of the advice given here is from people who have read it elsewhere and regurgitated it becase if they had actually had the experience of their recommendations themselves they would know a lot of it is not good advice.

Sorry, but thats rubbish. I've read this through and all the tuning advice has come from those who have been through it themselves and the vast majority is good advice. Only confusion was around the standard turbo on the car, which would not be capable of 360 bhp anyway.

My UK impreza is running 320bhp and similar torque. I looked into various options and spoke to many of the most respected experts on here when specifiying the cars modifications. It's been at this level for a year and a half now without a single problem. I'd reccommend my upgrade to anyone looking to make a classic quick and reliable without spending a fortune.

As I said, if you go to the late 300s things start to get significantly more expensive. 320bhp in a classic gives you a power to weight ratio eqivalent to the new baby Aston, so for most, that will be enough!

You ask, I deliver, then some!

https://www.scoobynet.com/scoobynet-...xperience.html

Don't forget, your classic will be significantly lighter than your mates Evo, so you won't need 360 to keep up!

If you're interested in the above, give David at APi a ring and tell him Ns04 sent ya for info on an Ns04 special

Are you on commission from API yet Seriously though to the OP, read NS04s thread linked above.........very informative and will describe what you can expect from the car. He also gives wise counsel in terms of the law of diminishing returns!

ns04 that was a brilliant write up. im at work at the moment pretty bored and that read was very interesting.

seems like the uprated turbo and the remap did most of the damage.

im going to take mine to scooby clinic more than likely because i've had work done from them before and the results put a smile on my face

would you recommend a re-map with the standard vf23 turbo??? i've been told that it is a good all round performer, with quick spool response low down in the rev range and maintaining boost to 6000rpm

let me know what you think

cheers

If you'll be happy with 330ish then the VF35 would be the best choice as it's the one with the best spool characteristics. I very much doubt you'll get it to 360 though.
