Turbo started to whine / whistle today
My turbo started to whine / whistle today,
It is a TD05H18G, fitted to my 2003 STI, supplyed and fitted by ZEN April 2006.
It whines when the boost comes on and continues right up the revs range getting slightly louder.
Any ideas what could be wrong

Hoses starting to come off anywhere so that air is escaping? Any loss of power? I don't have any expertise in this. Just that a hose popped off my '00 this week and I got a rushing air noise (that might be described as a whistle) and nowhere near as much boost.

No hoses off, still boosting normal.
It is more of a whine noise, which developed the day after it was serviced from my local specialist. Not Subaru Dealer. However he is a top guy and knows his Subaru stuff.
Iam awaiting delivery of a 3" decat exhaust, due next week so will get my local specialist to have a look at the turbo at the same time.
Hopefully nothing major wrong.

I was told that Turbos whistle when they start to go out of balance, on Renaults anyway. It always preceded the turbo giving up the ghost. If it is that it should start as soon as your turbo starts to spools up and peak on full boost.

My TD05 (stardard 16g) has always had a bit of a jet engine noise when at full boost in 5th gear, I just assumed this was normal.
It may be a very small boost leak that has developed that isn't really affecting boost levels or power, just making the whine/whistle you are hearing. Maybe during the service you had done the mechanic may have disturbed the boost pipework causing a small leak, you could try checking all the joints are tight?

The turbo will always whistle, its spinning at silly thousand RPM, roughly 7 times faster than the engine, a turbo whistling is normal, get it checked out, but its most likely a tiny air leak. In perspective, my scooby whistles a lot on boost, and my MR2 is crazy, sounds like a jet engine.

New/clean air filter will allow more turbo noise to be heard..
Just a thought..
