Question ECU....

Hi folks, getting a Haltech ECU, front mount and up-pipe/headers etc all fitted this week, just wondering if any of u have had any experiences of this type of ecu?

The guy doing all the work is a top tuner who knows his stuff, just wondering what to expect from the car with all this fittted??

I currently have a hayward and scott open-mouth downpipe with full blitz nur-spec r exhaust, walbro 255 pump, regulator, induction kit and g-reddy boost controller. The car is a 1999 RB5!!

Cheers

Kevin

If your budget can stretch I'd suggest changing the turbo, it seems a shame to have all those mods and be held back by the tiny blower you have. TD04 is only good for circa 290bhp with your mods yet a simple turbo swap could see you with 320bhp+ and similar torque levels for a few hundred quid.
If the headers are coming off then the labour shouldn't be that much more to swap it.

Question Turbo....

Thanks mate, im gonna be changing the turbo after christmas anyway for a td05 16g as i dont want much lag (i.e the 18 or 20g) and fitting a set of 740 injectors at the same time but just cant stretch to this this week due to pressies needing to be bought at the mo for christmas ....what bhp should i be getting with this ecu and all now then u reckon? Does the ecu give a vast difference to the car? Cant wait to get rid of that old MAF as well, ive had three of them in the last year !!

550's would see you with around 360bhp, for 440bhp I would be wanting to run 740's.

Question Injectors....

Hmmmm, think i will go for the 740cc injectors then, better running larger injectors which will have to work less to supply the petrol rather than small injectors maxed out?? Eh?

MY 01 onwards WRX uses 380cc – MY 01 STI uses 500cc – the 500cc injectors are rated at up to 400 bhp. Upgraded injectors are available in many capacities typically
550cc for up to 440 bhp –
650cc for up to 520 bhp and
740cc up to 590 bhp.

550 CC phase 1 injectors £370/set

550 CC phase 2 injectors £340/set

740 CC phase 1 injectors £400/set

740 CC phase 2 injectors £370/set

500 CC phase 3 new age injectors £400/set

650 CC phase 3 new age injectors £400/set

i was just going off afp web site

Why go to the expense of changing the ECU when you can just get the standard one re-mapped?? Only advantage to changing the ECU on 99/00 cars is if you want to go MAF less and want anti-lag and/or launch control.

For a TD05 16G the standard 440 injectors will cope, 550 will give you plenty of extra head room, 740 are to big IHMO and not needed until well over 400bhp, a 16G will only make around 350bhp.

Personally i'd wait til you can afford the turbo aswell and only have to pay for the car to be mapped once.
With your current turbo you'll probably make about 275bhp.

Question ECU....

Oh i defo want rid of the air flow meter (maf) as iv had three of them in a year and i think there are more options available with the new ecu as i might be wanting launch control possibly in the future depenfing on what spec i go for!! I think the td05 16g will be grand then and by the chat of u guys i think 550cc injectors will be fine??

As JGM said there is something wrong if you've used 3 MAFs in a year, thought mine was bad at 1 every 18months.

I'll have a VF34 turbo and 550 injectors for sale in about 2 months.

To my knowledge you have to stop and flash the new roms into the car as you are tuning , you don't have to do this on a TRUE live mapped system you just keep making changes till your done...

Its a brand new k+n induction kit, but to be honest i think the dealer had a faulty batch of MAF'S, they replaced the last two free of charge!!

Car is away now for a week to get all fitted/mapped, cant wait to get it back!!
Thanks for the comments and advice folks!!

Ah didn't realize that, assumed you had to do that with all ECU's, thought you meant they were off the shelf maps only and not custom mappable on the road.

Why would you want to that I said 550s give u extra head room, but seens as Td05 16G commonly make between 330-350bhp and 440s are rated up 350bhp with adequate fuel pressure, 550s (rated up to 440bhp) are not really a necessity at this level.

go for the simtec with a
td05-20g turbo,
740 injectors,
fmic,
oil cooler,
sx fuel reg kit,
255 fuel pump,
plugs,
manifold+uppipe,
guessing your decatted already.
this is good for 370 380bhp safely,
then a stage one 2.5 bottemend, more torque and the turbo will be less laggy.
youl be touching 400 at that.

I've got a simtek, 2.5, 20g and 550cc injectors. (and all the rest needed)

at 360bhp/380 ft/lbs the injector duty is at 75% (without any uprated fuel pressure regulator)

So upwards of that should be acheived with the correct balance of other components.... No ?
