Default Lots of smoke on start up!! Turbo??

I'm getting lots of smoke on start up. It fills half the street . Its ok when its up to temp.

I've gat a 3" de-cat turbo back exhaust so expecting some extra fumes but there seems to be rather alot

Could it be the turbo on its way out

If the smoke is blue then it will probably be the turbo

As above,

Does it smoke badly all the time or just first thing in the morning?

Have a look for Oil in the intercooler, if there is alot of oil in the pipes and intercooler this would point to the seals in the turbo being on the way out.

The other very rare option is that oil you have put in after the rebuild maybe thin and finding its way out of the turbo and being sent to the engine and is being burnt.

Two things to look at:

1) Oil level in the car, if it burns alot the level could get low quiet quickly.

2) Spark plugs getting oiley

Now you mention it, oil is getting low quite quickly. Keep topping up and just put it down to the oil still beding in.
Due to change the oil soon.
Will the smoke definatley be blue if its turbo?

If it’s a fresh build it can smoke a little until the motor beds in. This can be more so on a cold start due to the clearences being greater and clearing once temps are up, it could be more apparent on a forged motor if your is.

Wrong oils used on early run in car also be cause of burning oil, also check your oil level is not to high and your breathers are clear.

If the mileage is low give it time to settle, failing this it could be down to the turbo or something deeper.

Thanks guys.

Yes it is a forged build, done aprox 1500miles now, run in oil was not used just normal semi synth. Oil level is'nt to high but still using quite a bit.

Was going to change oil soon using silcolene S fully synth, see how that went.

I will check breathers etc just to see,

Thanks

My last build gave a plume of smoke at cold start up, turned out the clearance (piston/bore) was too much and oil was getting past the rings and into exhaust port.

How does the engine sound when cold and then when hot?

Mine was slappy when hot indicating the above problem.

1500 is more than enough IMO to settle in, if it has been like it from day 1 then it could well be down to the motor, failing that look to the turbo..
