No its not the same, an FCD regulates the boost level at which the ecu cuts the fuel or ignition as a saftey precaution to prevent over boosting from destroying your engine. I beleive the standard fuel cut is 1bar, or there abouts, and fcd can raise that to say 1.4bar, then you use the dawes device, or manual boost controller to increase your boost pressure. I am under the impression that the stock fuelling cant handle more than 1 bar, so needing a remap if you plan to go over 1 bar.

I fitted a HKS FCD to my 98 wagon in order to get above the factory limit for boost/fuel cut.
Worked just fine, but it is "ghetto tuning" and care must be taken as fuel cut is a defence against big repair bills.
Don't go daft and adjust a bit at a time like I did, and you can still retain the fuel cut feature just above the boost you are using.
It's not nice setting it up, as you will almost certainly hit fuel cut a few times and it's not pleasant.

Thanks for all the replies lads. Im running a chip and target boost is 16 psi or 1.1 bar. fuel cut on the chip is 18 psi or 1.3 bar. Im regularly hitting fuel cut as the car seems to be boosting to around 1.2bar and hits 1.3 and bang. peel face off steering wheel!! im convinced the car runs rich if anything so would like to fit a fuel cut defender to stop the fuel cut and not to raise boost above what it is now as i can't have the chip re-mapped.
do we have a model number or part number for the hks fCD
cheers again
