Default Boost Problem and Oxygen sensor

Hi guys

I have had a problem on my 1993 JDM WRX Classic since I purchased that car last April whereby it doesn't quite have the umph and doesn't boost up properly seems to get to 08psi and no further ...

I went on a rolling road charity day at prosport where it was putting out about 190 bhp but they also noticed it wasn't boosting.. they suspected the turbo was not working correctly.

I then took it a place in Stockport who specialises in race cars as Prosport were to busy at the time. This Rick Wood place charged me £200 to tell me they also thought it MIGHT be the turbo.

Obviously replacing the Turbo on a MIGHT was going to be a costly thing to do if it wasn't ... anyway I was skint now after £200 from tricky dickies.... so took it off the road until I had time and money ..

It was also confirmed by the previous owner that he'd had a recon turbo fitted so he doubted it was that.

So after reading loads of link and threads on here about boost problems and the likes ... i decided to start with the basic stuff and work up to the more expensive stuff as I went on ...

So this morning I fitted a new BOV as I had one spare, I replaced all the vacuum pipes cleaned the boost out, cleaned the MAF and .... Oooooooo whats this bit I found just lying under all my pipes dangling down ... (see pic)

I presume its the Oxygen Sensor.

The other end goes into my boost solenoid

What I can't suss out, if I'm right in thinking its the Oxy Sensor then where on the exhaust it screws into... also does this mean I have had a big whole in the exhaust where it should be ... hence no pressure to boost .... and more important the fact its being lying around under there giving false readings ... then what damage has it caused ??? and would the fact its not in the right place explain my boost problems.

Cheers
Paul

OK I have just found a diagram of where the sensor is supposed to be located

However I haven't got anywhere on my down pipe that leads to my Turbo that seems to be a hole where it would go into?

It does have an aftermarket exhaust system and decat pipe so could it in fact not have a sensor point ?? hence why it might have just been left lying around .... again the question must be ... surely it has to go to something

hi the sensor you found is the cat on fire sensor and as such is not needed(only needed in japan). on my import i have now removed it to fit a decat down pipe. the fact it has been lying out will not give false readings or affect the cars running. as for a hole in the exhaust the sensor goes in the exhaust after the turbo so again should not cause any probs with boost.

hope you get it sorted soon

if you have an aftermarket down pipe then it may not have whole for the sensor as is not standard in the uk(only needed in japan).
