What is this part
As you look at the engine from the front of the car, on the left next to the intercooler and directly above the turbo is a metal air box type thingy. Everytime I do any type of highish speed eg 80 it comes loose and makes an annoying sound when im slowing down and when I open the bonnet I find that its started to burn the little intake part!. Usually I just bend it back into place its fine but now its so loose its always making the sound. Simple question is, can I remove this part?. thanx

Had the same problem, it liked to vibrate around 3500 RPM and was really annoying. Try moving it about a bit then tightening the bolts, use spring washers too. Worked for me!

It's a combination heat shield/air scoop to the turbo. I don't think you would notice much apart from slightly increased under bonnet temperatures from removing it. Still better to try tightening it before removing it, maybe one or two spot welds if it's being stubborn.

I removed mine about 3 months ago as it was in the way of my new intercooler. Hasn't caused any problems. Was a bitch to remove, it's held on with about 8 bolts and some are hard to get to.

or you can do some home diagnostics:
rev it until you hear the knocking noise.
then pull one sparkplug at the time and rev it again (offcourse it will run rough due to three cilinders only)
repeat it for all four cilinders.
if at one cilinder the knocking has dissapeared then yes it's then big end and you know which cilinder. if the noise stays at all four then its unlikely to be the big ends
