Why all of a sudden is my oil temp go up?
How do,
My Impreza noramlly doesn't go near 100degrees even on hard driving, but over the past week I've noticed that it's at 100degrees on normal driving, and if I go on a A road or for a bit of a blast it gets rather close to 110-120degrees.
it soon goes down, but I'm not likely it at all.
I've checked the oil and it could do with a change but its not sludgey or white or anything like that. Theres no leaks that I can see, no bangs knocks or whining noises. I'm realy puzzled.
Could it just be the oil has reached its life expectancy and its due a change? It's a 8 months old and has covered 4000miles?
Any ideas?

Water level is fine, and theres loads of coolant.
Oil pressure is as normal. Really confused.
I'm gonna do an oil change as it needs on anyway, but I've never known oil to have such a sharp drop in effectiveness at keeping oil temps down, just seems very weird.

A good full-synthetic oil will run all day at 120c but obviously, you should not normally reach that kind of figure on the road! Check the oil level. Low oil has more work to do, so will run hotter. Have to admit, I've never really seen any difference in temp. readings as the oil gets older (never goes beyond 3-4k miles old anyway!)
My oil temp gauge suddenly started to show 120c but as the needle would not return to it's stop when cold, it was a gauge fault!

Right just done y oil change and it's made no difference at all?
I don't think I need an oil cooler as the car was running fine at one, point this hot temp reading simply appeared over night.
All I can think of is, it's a themostate or something similar, or maybe te actually gauge itself.

Finally I've figured it out, after all this time. It was simple, the mod I did to relocate the oil temp sensor was to blame.
I'd used a piece of braided hose to move the sensor away from the inlet to help it give a more correct reading.
Thing it I run the braided hose I used to do it, along by the water hose, and of course with heat transferance the temp sensor was getting a false reading.
Now, I've relocated the braided hose, and I'm back do to my 90ish degrees reading.
