Default Which turbo onto my bugeye WRX?

Not wanting huge power etc, just a nice runner that won't bust the box!!

The list so far?

VF34/35

VF39

VF23

Most of my driving is motorway, with the odd back road blast.

Mods will be, FMIC, full 3" decat, induction kit, pinks & headers.
Which one would suit me best?

Thanks
S!

if it was mine i would go for the vf35 as its cheaper than the 34, sti top mount cooler, a decent pannel filter, a 2 and half inch exhaust should be plenty if you not looking for to much power, some ported headers and i think you should already have 440 injectors which will be fine, i know the last of the classic shape had 440's so i carnt see them down grading, then get it remapped and you could see up to 330 bhp, thats what i did on my classic anyway which was great to drive.

I spent a fair amount of time looking into this and the VF35 is the way to go - great turbo and you can get them for a decent price.

My mods about to be installed are:

STi backbox
STi up-pipe - ported
PPP STi Sports cat downpipe
STi 500cc pink injectors
A set of NGK PFR7B plugs
A VF35 turbo
A Walbro Fuel Pump 255
Samco turbo to intercooler 'Y' pipe
Ported and wrapped headers
Remap from AndyF

I already have a decat centre and replacment filter.

Looking for a nice safe map of 300-310 bhp as I'm the same as you, mostly motorway miles.

Richard.

VF35 without a doubt. Second only to the Std TD04 for response, but will comfortably produce the kind of power you're after.

Only possible downside is that it's a noisy little bugger!! But I like the noise!

I have heard it can be prone to surge with a FMIC, but good mapping should sort that.

Yeah, wasn't silent_running getting huge surge problems with his vf3x with a FMIC? So much that he changed to a td05 in the end?

I've gone down the td05-20g route myself, which I love and hate at the same time. The rush of power at anything over 3800-3900 rpm is addictive, but I also don't like the way the car drives below 3500 revs. It takes a while to get used to the power delivery, but now that I'm used to it it's not too bad to be honest.

I've got an after market manifold, though, and this probably has a detrimental effect on spool (but then apparently it should give higher top end power). Autobahn88 FMIC for me.

If I was doing things again and were planning on stopping at this level of mods, I'd probably go for a td05-18g if outright acceleration was important or a td04 hybrid from andy forrest if I decided I valued low end spool up more. For both turbo's I'd go STI TMIC.

I personally wouldn't go for a VF3x as they're really expensive new (in the region of 700 quid, i believe), and I don't feel comfortable buying a used turbo as you wouldn't know for sure what it had done previously etc or if it was going to spit bits into your engine. I'm sure there will be lots of people saying I'm just scare mongering and trying to justify my purchase, but that's my opinion anyway

I think you should budget for a new clutch also, mine's stinking to high heaven at the moment after any sort of blast and I'm not running huge torque (335 lbft). Gearbox has so far held up, but if I ever get around to fitting a 2.5 which was the original plan, then the gearbox needs to be upgraded.

Not everyone agrees with my mods and plans, though, I'm sure.

An STI top-mount would be a better compromise, an FMIC will be over-kill, but they do look nice don't they...

P.S. I fitted one and get surge and dump valve problems for free

Cheers for the comments, the FMIC is really for the looks TBH. It suits the car
I've already got an uprated exedy clutch and Lightened ACT flywheel.

I'm sure Andy F will be able to sort it so it runs nice.

I have an Andy F Hybrid TD04 and find it to be superb. However, much of my driving is around town, with the odd bit of motorway/ b road stuff.

The VF35 would be a good choice for a motorway muncher as its a great compromise between responsiveness and outright grunt. I think Henrik's comment re the bigger TD's are telling.

You may lose a bit of responsiveness with the FMIC.

Unfortunatly they did downgrade size to 380's so bigger injectors will be needed also
