Default Overboost :(

How do I sort this problem? The only 2 things I know is to remap the ECU or get a fuel cut defender, niether of which I want to do.

What are my options? I have 1 cat removed, dump valve and air filter fitted to my 03 WRX!

How much boost are you seeing? is it hitting the fuel cut?

I believe it is cutting fuel yes, mainly in 4th and 5th gear.
It's going in for service on Monday mate. But I want to have a head start on what can be done to fix the problem. I have a feeling they will just 'say' you could do this or that, but I want them to be able to fix the problem while it's there because I can't afford to take more time off work taking it there and back etc.

The only other option I can think of is a manual or electronic boost controller. You should get a gauge fitted too. Either that or have it mapped.

Hmm, I really don't want to get it mapped yet though plus you're talking what £600?
Someone was also saying boost controlers don't mix well with newage models? I never thought from doing the few mods that I have done would mess up the fueling and boost etc. like this.
I'd like to get a boost gauge, most people have 3, oil and oil pressure as well, how crucial's that to have? All these guages etc. prob be about the same price to map it in the end. I was wanting to get an upgraded fuel pump and different back box before I mapped it..

Get it remapped £400 from Mocom Racing, also get the fuel pump done. The back box doesn't need doing before the map. If you get it done properly you won't need all the clutter of gauges/fixes etc.

£400 for a remap? What are Mocom Racing like? good reputation? and which fuel pump, Walbro 255 is it? Eventually I was hoping for about 300bhp but at the moment I just want it running properly and not cutting power!

Are you sure you are hitting fuel cut? It will feel like hitting a brick wall when it comes in as it will stop the flow of fuel to the injectors to prevent overboost and engine damage.

What boost figures are you seeing? This could simply be down to a gunked up boost control solanoid. Although if you have decated this may increase your spool up and boost, but shouldnt do it to the extent you are hitting fuel cut.

Basic rule is don't do things in bits. Get the cat back on before you do some damage, save up, get all the bits you need then get it mapped properly.

Might feels like it takes a bit longer but it'll be shorter than losing your engine.

Best way to describe it is I'm driving along in 4th gear coming to a hill so put my foot down gets into the turbo and then it's like someones put the brakes on there's just no power there it doesn't want to go, I'll be on the motorway 5th gear get into the turbo and it just doesnt pull like it should, its holding back. It's ok in 1st, 2nd, 3rd gear no problem.

Since putting the dump valve on I know it's overfuelling because now when driving slowly the exhaust pops quite often when changing gear which it didnt used to do.
I'd rather just fork out what I have to get it done, properly mapped, uprated fuel pump and get it sorted because it's driving me up the wall with it being like this now.
How much does fitting a fuel pump cost and should I go for a 255ltr one?
Anything els other than a fuel pump that's pretty crucial to do whilst having a remap, please bear in mind I'm not trying to brake any BHP records

Map, fuel pump (255), uprated STi Panel Filter shouldn't be more than £550.

Decat Up pipe is about £100 and an hours labour to fit.

MY 53WRX mods list is on view my scooby.

Thanks, yeh I've just been looking at your spec! Looks good

I'm very tempted to just go for this! I already have a K&N panel filter on it, why is the STi one better to get?
When you say Up pipe, do you mean the manifold? or is the up pipe another section that attatches to the manifold pipe?
The previous owner added the center section (removing 1 cat) and put a back box on. I'v been in 2 minds about removing any more cats as you risk getting a £1000 on the spot fine by the police which I cant afford, especially not after this... lol

The up-pipe

Stainless exhausts manifolds headers

Manifold Up-Pipe Impreza Turbo

You will get through MOT/ roadside no probs with the OEM Catted Down Pipe thats still there. I only had a sports cat in the DP nothing else, same on the STi too. No MOT issues.

Panel filter is only £55 and worth doing as part of the routine servicing. But K&N one is fine only change it if its due.

You could also do the sports cat but for something like the H&S one its approx £425+VAT+fittng (1hour)

So to do the job properly I really need to do the following:

Up pipe - £145 approx
Walbro 255ltr fuel pump - £80
ECU remap - £450 @ Mocom.

Would Mocom be able to fit the following and do all in one go? and to the best of your knowledge the up pipe wont affect my emissions?

It does affect the emissions but within the MOT limits to pass.

I am sure mocom are still remapping at £400
Ian at H&S is pretty good at discounts, mention Snet and my car and you will get close to £100. Mocoms can also supply H&S parts, fuel pumps etc and would be able to give you an all in price. I had all parts and mapping fitted by Mocom

As long as it passes its MOT!
I've seen the same pump for £15 cheaper at Scoobyworld so would probably get that from them, then get the up pipe fitted and mapped at Mocom. I had a look on Mocom's website and for mapping on newage model they say £450.. All fitted and done I'm probably looking at about £700.
I hadn't counted on having to do this so soon, but it can't stay how it is now and I cant see a safe and realistic alternative. Don't want to get a FCD and not keen on messing around with the boost as im a beginner.

Best thing to do is ring Zak at Mocoms for an all in price. You will get the fuel pump supplied a few quid cheaper online but then you will end up paying more with fitment. The remaps were on offer for £400, its worth seeing if its still running for SNet members. I think the fuel pumps were on offer to snet members too recently for about £80 or so. Like I say give him a call and see what he can do, he is really friendly and knows lots !
