Unhappy Bug Eye won't rev up !! Advice needed please??

I've had 3 Subaru's over the last 8 years and have encountered my fair share of problems, I felt pretty compitent with fault finding and maintaining them untill now! I have now got a problem I don't know anything about so any help would be great please. My car is a 51 plate with PPP stage 1 (ECU, Exhaust, Fuel pump etc) it's only done 50k and fully serviced, it's really well looked after and no expence spared on it. Ok what happened is 2 days ago I was driving at about 30mph in steady traffic and suddenly the 'check engine light' came on, the car continued to drive perfectly for about half a mile. Suddenly the revs dropped and the car stalled, so obviously I pulled over. I turned off the ignition then tried to restart the car and it started first fire as usual and also ticked over perfectly not missing a beat. I then tried to rev the car and it stalled instantly. I restarted it again and found the revs would gradually build if I really lightly pressed the accelerator but really miss firing. It was undriveable so had car towed to a friends garage where we hooked it to his diagnostic machine. 4 faults were displayed, three of which were various exhaust temp faults, and one which was some kind of speedo fault which we could not remove at all. We found that when we cleared the faults we could the car started and ran perfect for about half a mile then same again, rev's dropped, spluttered and stalled. This happened every time, cleared faults, car ran, the stopped. Note car still starts every time and ticks over perfect. My friend at the garage was stumped so rang another friend who works at a Subaru performance specialist and had the car recovered again and taken there. Now they saying that they think it may be a melted piston causing the problem??? Thing is I had the cylinder 3 piston melt on my L reg classic about 8 years ago and the car wouldn't tick over or run, but as I say the car runs perfect for a while when codes are removed on this car so surely a damaged piston wouldn't correct it's self when the ecu faults were removed?? any ideas please?? my first thought was a split air pipe or fuel pump problem?? fuel pump been tested as good condition with no problems???
