Port the headers out and change the uppipe and decat the exhaust system. You can't do to much without needing remap really.

The headers or for a better word exhaust manifolds don't always match the heads and you end up with a lip that slows down the exhaust gases. The manifolds need removing and porting out with a grinder or you can buy them already done if it's not something you can do. They will need heat wrapping as well.

soot line:

After porting:

If your handy with the spanners then you can do it yourself. Do a search on here there is plenty of info.

Basically if you want to reduce spool up time you need to get the exhaust gases flowing better through the exhaust and headers. The faster the flow, the faster the turbo will spool up.
The easiest ways to do this is to de cat the exhaust (remove the catalytic converters), both the down pipe and the centre section. This will get the gases exiting the turbo quicker.
If you want to go a step further you can port your headers and up pipe as meantioned by T5OLF. Basically what your trying to do here is to reduce the friction in the headers that will slow the gases down as they enter the turbo.
You can either buy some headers and an up pipe that have already been ported, I bought some off here for £200, or you can do it yourself if your competent with a grinder.
Once your headers have been ported then the flow will have been speeded up when entering the turbo, therefore making the turbo spool up quicker.
Obviously once you have done these mods it is always a good idea to get the ecu remapped to make the most of what you've done

Check your pm or you have to replace the entire ecu

If you confident and or brave, you could always have a go porting and polishing the hot side of the turbo. Lots of great threads on porting turbos on NASIOC.com.

You have to dismantle the turbo, so I wouldn't personally try it but as I say, if your confident then the rewards can be fairly substantial in that you will measureably reduce spool point and lag.

You can also lighten the crank pulley so that the engine doesn't have to work so hard to spin up, the stock pulley weighs a massive 2.5 kg, change it to a Perrin one of 500g and you will notice a big difference straight away.
