Default what is remapping?

Can someone explain getting the ecu remapped ie how much bhp do you get or do you choose how much to increase?
I have an 06 wrx with catback system.
Thanks in advance.

I think its more a case of how deep your pockets are mate.
Most get a figure in mind then work towards it.... example my scoob was standard, but have gone about sorting/ upgradeing Suspension, Breaks, fuel pump, fuel reg, injectors, Zorst , plugs, down pipe, Fmic, turbo etc, then a new ECU which will be mapped to the best BHP/fuel/reliabilty.

Speak with a few of the mappers they are more than happy to give advise ( usally) .
I told them what bhp i wanted to achieve and they told me what was required , and the cost But worth it

remap involves tailoring the fuelling and ignition and boost among other parameters retained within the ecu to make the current generic map custom to the car and it's current mods if any. Gains can be made due to the map being custom for that car rather than it being generic one fits all for that model.
Due to tollerances some engines take more timing or run richer or leaner etc etc.. then you add mods on top and the current map is not getting the best out of the car.
It can be tailored to the fuel you use rather than having to cater for carp fuel etc.
Gains in throttle response, mpg, power and torque just by tailoring it to the individual car are very noticable.
