Fan comes on when ignition is on
Hi guys
IVe just bought a K plate WRX. When I put the ignition on the fan goes on and off intermittently, non stop. Is this normal? If so, why does it do it?
It dosnt matter if the engine is freezing cold or roasting.
cheers

Sounds like the diagnostic connectors are connected. Look under the steering column, you should see a pair of black and a pair of green connectors. If they're plugged into each other try unplugging them. You may be pleasantly surprised

Has it got Air Conditioning?? If so, check it isnt switched on. If it is, that is why your fans are always coming on with the ignition on.

If the 2 pairs of connectors are connected up then not only will the fan be activating but you hear regular clicking noises plus the CEL light should be flashing.
If this isn't the case then the coolant temp sensor may be at fault as mentioned above.
You can (only sometimes it seems) have the ECU report that sensor as faulty just by connecting the 2 black connectors but it also seems that that sensor can be a bit iffy but NOT trigger the CEL lights to flash. I may well have this issue with my '95 WRX as it can be the cause of starting problems which I am sometimes suffering at present but the CEL lights are NOT indicating a fault.
