I'm sure this query has done the rounds but I have just had my 10k service on my Spec D and I was given the option of semi-synth of fully synth.
I chose the latter and they put in Castrol 10w-60 which, when I checked the manual, was not the recommended grade. They also did not have any 1 litre bottles and so will need to purchase some oil for top up purposes.
Apart from additional fuel consumption and loss of power in running a thicker oil are there any downsides?
It seems to me that the thicker oil will give greater protection to the engine. For a given engine do you need to top up less often than with thinner oil?

Usually 5w-40 or 10w-50 synthetic cover all.
Cheers
Guy.
